Here's my thoughts on the hacking:
As an intellectual exercise; it's an outrage. You expect the government to keep your information private.
In the real world; such is life.
For every dork working on computer security, there are 100s of other dorks working on ways around it. Once information is put in a computer, and that computer is hooked to a network, the information is there for the taking.
Truth be told; it bothers me more that corporations are building a dossier on me, my lifestyle, my spending habits, etc., and then selling my information to other corporations.
If you are one of the millions that had your info stolen, are you at any more risk of having bad things happen then if you are just walking down the street? Probably not. Risk is a part of life, and life in the 21st century includes eCrimes.
Short of withdrawing from society, there's not much that can be done about it. We lock our car doors, but thieves still steal our cars. The same is true in the cyber world. That's why I use your name for all my on-line activities.

Are you saying that people were more upset over deflategate then they are over hackgate?
If so... different strokes for different folks. I suspect (but I haven't googled) that more people are interested in football then are interested in government. We are all given a short time on this celestial plane, and we each have to spend it pursuing interests that make us happy.

A consultant who did some work with a company contracted by OPM to manage personnel records for a number of agencies told Ars that he found the Unix systems administrator for the project “was in Argentina and his co-worker was physically located in the [People’s Republic of China]. Both had direct access to every row of data in every database: they were root. Another team that worked with these databases had at its head two team members with PRC passports. I know that because I challenged them personally and revoked their privileges. From my perspective, OPM compromised this information more than three years ago and my take on the current breach is ‘so what’s new?’”
