Lots of things had changed for Sophia since turning 27. She was engaged to a guy from one of the richest families in New York. She was now living a high life on the Upper East Side. She came from Brooklyn originally. She had only left Brooklyn last year after her break up with her ex. He ex was very different to her fiancé Eric. Eric was predictable, a provider and kind hearted but also a little boring. Eric- http://az801229.vo.msecnd.net/wetpaint/2012/12/w630_63846--1984482674785543489.jpg was good to look at but didn’t really sexually excited her like her ex did and he was quite boring in bed too and only used a few moves and positions. Her ex Curtis Harris who was known as Fix on the streets of Brooklyn because he can get anything anybody needs. He was what you call bad boy but man did he do bad well. He is so tall and handsome as hell. She loved him dearly and was loyal. She was a ride or die girl until he cheated on her. He broke her heart so she left. He was the reason she choose a guy like Eric who was secure and predictable.

Eric was away on an a business trip for a few days and she had no concerns about him straying at all because he was an honest man who couldn’t tell a lie. Eric never would hurt her and she knew it. If anyone was going to hurt anyone in this relationship it was her. She liked him a lot but she wasn’t sure she loved him. Some of her girlfriends from Brooklyn were taking her out tonight to celebrate her engagement and her coming up in the world (making her way out of Brooklyn). She hoped they wouldn’t go to bars or clubs that Curtis would be at. She hadn’t seen him a year because she rarely went out or saw her Brooklyn friends because she had made new Upper East Side girlfriends but didn’t fancy a night out with them. Her phone went off and it was Eric saying how much he loved and missed her. She heard a beep outside and looked outside seeing- https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/2e/2a/5f/2e2a5f0e9b76ee74d2b1507a9ac49f83.jpg.

She went out. If Eric saw what she was going out he would be mortified. He was use to the finer things not tackiness like this big pink Hummer. She got in. “Wow your house is big.” Barbie said. The townhouse- http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2006/03/manhattantownhouse.jpg was amazing and she knew when and if they had children it would be a great place to raise a family during the week and then weekend in the Hamptons. “You have definitely made an upgrade from Fix.” Lola said. “Can we not talk about him? I have moved on and I am engaged now.” I said showing off my ring- https://i.ytimg.com/vi/i8IYjuFgxhE/maxresdefault.jpg. The pulled up to a club that she used to be a regular at with Curtis. They went in and straight to the bar. She spotted Curtis in the VIP Area and wanted to leave but the girls were having none of. Instead she downed several shots.

'What a difference a year made?' Curtis Harris thought as surveyed the club from the balcony of the VIP. For starters this was his club now. A few months past 30, Curtis was working on changing his image for the better. Gone were the days of him scraping by on the streets of Bed-Stuy trying to make ends. He'd traded in his baggy jeans and white t-shirts for more classy apparel, like the suit he wore tonight. There were very few late nights doing dangerous things with questionable company. Of course his hands weren't completely clean. He still had to handle business directly on occasion but those occurrences were few and far between these days.

He'd even bought a house in the newly gentrified Williamsburg. A change in scenery meant a change in the people he encountered. Introducing himself to his neighbors as "Curtis" instead of "Fix" happened by accident but the name change suited his new environment. He wasn't a hoodlum anymore, he was a business man. Sure he still had thug tendencies but what successful businessman didn't have an edge. The looks he gave across a boardroom table were the same, the only difference was he didn't have a gun in his hand.

"Hey Fix," he heard from behind him and spun to see his oldest friend. Deacon "DK" Townes was the only person he tolerated that name from in his new world, but still he raised an eyebrow as the man approached. "My bad...Curtis...but you never guess who I just saw come through security."

"I saw her," he said with a nod at the group of women downing shots by the bar. One woman in particular, his ex, Sophia Rossi. The love of his life, though he didn't realize it until she was gone. And he didn't delude himself into thinking it wasn't his fault. She did everything for him and he took her for granted. Betrayed her trust, sending her into the arms of some boring ass white boy. He'd seen their engagement announcement in the papers and while he thought it was fast, it wasn't a surprise. Sophia was ready to settle down and she found someone who could give her the life of her dreams. He wanted to be happy for her, but Curtis couldn't help thinking about the what ifs. What if he hadn't cheated? What if she had stayed? What if he actually gave her that ring he bought the week before she left? All the thinking wasn't getting him anywhere but in a circle. He'd done her wrong, terribly wrong, and she would never forgive him.

"You think she knows this your place now?"

"Doubt it...it's not like it was advertised," Curtis said with a smirk and Dk slapped him on the back.

"So you just gonna drool over her all night or you gonna go down there and say what's up?"

"Should I," was his honest reply and Dk shook his head, chuckling.

"Look bruh," he said throwing his arm around Curtis's broad shoulders and pulling him in close. "You fucked up man...bad...that's true but you loved that girl. Really loved her. Your dick just forgot for a minute that's all. You not that dude anymore and you should let her know. Even if she don't take you back, she deserves to know what you meant to her..."

"What she means to me," Curtis corrected, and took a deep breath. "Aight man Imma go say what's up...congratulate her on the engagement and what not...offer some VIP treatment for her and her homegirls. Show her ain't no hard feelings."

"Sounds good bruh."

"Aight...wish me luck." With that Curtis made his way to the private elevator in his office that would bring him down to the club's main floor. He moved like he had ice in his veins, offering nods to acquaintances and half-hugs to old homies, but he never took his eyes off of her. And that dress. And those shoes. As he drew closer, the rock on her finger caught his eye and he grit his teeth at tasteful design. It wasn't at all her style but he guessed he wasn't the only one who changed.

"I trust you ladies are having a good time," he said as he came up behind them, a cool smile on his face as he made eye contact with all of them. He left Sophia for last and reached to take her hand, kissed her knuckles. "I just came to say congratulations and offer you all VIP for the night. Bottle service. Private booth. The whole nine. All on me," he said, finally letting go her hand at the last before he waved over a cocktail waitress. "This is Kari and she'll take care of you tonight. Enjoy yourselves ladies."

Before anybody could say a word, Curtis disappeared into the crowd. Putting himself out there was one thing but he couldn't trust himself if she rejected him in public. All he could hope was that she would find her way back to him before the night was over.

Being here was making Sophia feel so many feelings. It had been so long since she was here. She hadn’t been here since the breakup. She wanted a big hole to form under her feet and swallow her up. She had no idea the girls were going to bring her down here tonight. She hoped it wasn’t a set up. She was happy (mostly) and secure now. Her life was good. Sophia still had feelings for Curtis. He was her first proper love and he would always mean so much to her.

She hoped that Curtis would be out work somewhere so he wouldn’t be here. She had spotted some of his boys but not him yet and she didn’t want to spot him. She glanced around the club and suddenly she spotted him. He was in a suit which surprised her. He looked pretty good! Her heart began racing and her palms got sweaty. She thought to herself girl stop it you’re engaged to the greatest guy in the world.

He approached and started talking to them as a group. He was giving a lot of eye contact to all of the girls and then he got to her. He took her hand and kissed it. She found herself blushing a little. Curtis always made her blush so much. Her heart was racing and her palms extremely sweaty. He congratulated on her engagement. He was giving the VIP area and rinks on him all night.

He introduced the waitress to them and then he disappeared off into the crowd. The waitress kept them with drinks in their hands all night. She was annoyed about how he had thought it was okay to come over to her and then try and buy her in a way in her mind. She saw him the corner booth with some of his boys. She walked over. “Curtis get your ass up I need to talk to you.” She said sassily. When she was drunk she was always extremely sassy.

On most night, Curtis spent his time in his office, watching the club from the mirrored windows that overlooked the main floor. But not tonight. She might not have been his girl anymore, but he was still very protective of Sophia. Despite the posh environ, things could still get rough every now and then among the well dressed thugs who frequented his establishment.

Though he never left the VIP, he did well to keep his distance from Sophia and her friends. He didn't want her thinking he was stalking her or anything, nor did he want to impose on her good time. And being the good buddy that he was, DK rounded up a few of their friends to help keep Curtis' mind off the one who got away.

A toast was being made in his honor when he saw Sophia making her was over to his private booth. His eyes were immediately drawn to her hips, clocking their sway as she strutted across the floor. For a moment, everybody disappeared. It was just him and her, and he couldn't help the grin that came to his face when he saw the look in her eye.

“Curtis get your ass up I need to talk to you,”
she said, followed by a round of "ohhhs" from his buddies. She was the only person he'd ever allow talk to him like that without repercussion, and everybody knew it. It wasn't the first time she'd cussed him out in public, only now he wouldn't be able to take her home and show her who's boss when the night was over. That didn't stop his cock from jumping in his boxer briefs though, nor did it keep him from sliding out of the booth.

"I imagine it's not a complaint about service because Kari's my best waitress," he said with a cool smile as stood, buttoning his jacket. Curtis smoothed his lapels before he stepped closer to her, placed his arm on the small of her back. "Why don't we go to my office? It's quiet and we won't have an audience," he said with a nod at his friends before he ushered her towards the back of the VIP and up a short flight of stairs to his office above.

"I'd offer you a drink but, judging by your tone, I imagine you've had quite enough," Curtis said as he closed the door behind them. He made sure to lock it before he sat strategically in one of the plush chairs along the wall that joined the windows. Taking the chair behind his desk might have given the impression that he was showing off, while the sofa would have implied that he wanted her to sit next to him. While both those things were true, Curtis didn't want to make it obvious. She said she wouldn't to take, though he would have loved for more than that, he wouldn't fuck up this opportunity being presumptuous. "Have a seat Soph...I know those shoes are killing you," he added with a smile as he unbuttoned his jacket and loosened his tie.

Sophia didn’t care there was all of Curtis friends around his table. She was mad at him. She knew she was the only one allowed to break his balls in front of other people. She had always been one to call out his bullshit. Her mind wandered to the sex they would have after her calling him out. He would own her little body and show her whose she was. She shooed the thought away.

That smooth, cool, smug smile made her skin crawl. He stood up and moved over to her. He placed his arm around her. She had always loved his arm around her. It made her feel safe and like he was proud to show she was his. His arm around her now was making her feel so uncomfortable. She fidgeted with her hair which was a nervous habit.

They went up to his office. “Shut your mouth about anything to do with me. I can drink how much I want.” She raised her voice at him. She hated how he was trying to slip criticism of her in. He sat in his chair and she thought to herself ‘smug bastard’. He told her to sit. “No I am fine. I will stand.” She said just to spite him.

“I think it is great this place is now yours but that doesn’t mean you can try and buy me with your fucking VIP area and liquor. I am engaged and you know it is so inappropriate to do such things. Whatever game you’re playing needs to stop. I have moved on and so should you!” She said.

Curtis knew exactly where this conversation would go. If nothing else, Sophia was predictably mouthy and independent. He sat back in his seat, smoothed his tie as she laid into him. But just because he expected it didn't mean he took it well, Curtis clenched his jaw and let out a heavy breath through his nose before he opened his mouth.

"Well Sophia, you could have just said no," he said coolly, leaning back in his seat to look up at her. "Could have cut this whole thing off before it started...and don't accuse me of trying to game you either. If I didn't mean what I said I wouldn't have said it Sophia, you know me better than that," he said standing, his voice slowly rising. "And don't pretend like you didn't at least think I might be here, whether it's mine or not. I ain't done nothing but be civil to you so you can save that victim shit for ole boy," he heard himself say with a little too much bite. Curtis paused to take a breath and moved around Sophia, heading for the door. This was not how he wanted this to go, he did not want her to see him lose his temper.

Another deep breath, his hand on the knob, Curtis tried again. "Look Sophia I know I did you dirty and an apology ain't enough to make up for betraying you but that don't mean I don't want you to be happy...even if that's not with me Soph. We were together for damn near four years Sophia, you can't expect me to just let that go...even if it was me who fucked it up. And I know you moved on but that ain't gonna stop me for caring about you and being there for you if you need me," he said, finally opening the door. He had to let her leave, as much as he didn't want to, he didn't have a choice. Old Curtis would have pulled his chair in front of the door and dared her to go. "If you never want to see me again, I can't blame you, but you can't stop me from being civil when you come into my place. Married or not, Sophia, you mean too much to me."

Sophia wanted to wipe that smug look off of Curtis’s face. The way he was acting was really making her mad. She hated he was turning this on her but he was right she could of said no and left. He stood up and his voice started to rise. “I forgot you own this fucking town. Like I am not allowed to come back here because of your stupid ass. You didn’t have to come over to me.” She said. She ran her hand through her hair looking at him. She watched him head for the door. “How the hell did you know I got engaged anyway? I very rarely see anyone from around here anymore and I don’t come back here, tonight is a one of.” She said. She looked around the room thinking of all the memories they had made here at this club and this back room office. They had many fun times together and she loved him dearly. She still loved him but there was no way she would let on that she did.

She couldn’t let him ever back in because he was still the same guy who hurt her. “No an apology is definitely not going to fix any of it or make me forget. If you really wanted me to be happy you wouldn’t have come over to me, you must know it would have brought back so many feelings for me. We were good together for most of the four years but you ruined it and I don’t need you around during this big new chapter of my life making things awkward and difficult for me.” She said. She walked over to the door he opened. “I don’t want to ever see you again. I wish you well Curtis and I wish things were different but you only have yourself to blame for all of this.” She said before walking out of the room. She didn’t know if she believed she didn’t want to see him again. She missed him a lot but couldn’t allow herself to give into those feelings of missing him and loving him.

Old Curtis would have chased her down, grabbed her around the waist, and pressed her against the wall. Showered her with empty apologies between soft kisses and gentle gropes of her shapely body. Would have lifted ever dress as he slide down to his knees and lifted her leg to rest on his shoulder before he planted a soft kiss on the pussy he loved so much. Whether she genuinely forgave him or not didn't matter, so long as she didn't tell him to stop.

New Curtis shook those thoughts out of his head as he shut the door. They weren't going to get him anywhere good. She was right he had to let her go and it was all his fault. Dejected, he pulled off his jacket and tie, flopped down in the chair behind his desk. Usually the intricately carved mahogany and ergonomically designed chair made him feel powerful but nothing could replace what he had lost. He pulled open the bottom drawer, and with a flick of the handle, released the false bottom. Inside was a bottle of cognac, a chrome semi-automatic .38 handgun, and a picture in a simple black wooden frame. The gun he left. The bottle, Curtis popped the cork and took a long healthy drink. The picture, a selfie Sophia took of the two of them in bed after his 27th birthday. He had already passed out and her face was contorted in a silly pose with her tongue sticking out, but it was his favorite picture of them because it told everything about who they were. Him, the stoic thug, and her, the silly sweetheart. She brought light to his darkness, balancing him out, and he couldn't fault her for wanting to live a different life.

"The one thing Fix can't fix," he said with a snort as he ran his fingers along her face before he put the picture back in his desk and closed the drawer. He knew he should have gotten rid of it, like everything else she left behind, but he couldn't bring himself to toss it away.

He sat for a while, and eventually lit up a smoke. Midway through, Curtis decided that as long as he was alive, he wouldn't give up hope. He picked up the phone on his desk and dialed a number he had committed to memory.

"Ain't work out huh," DK said with a chuckle.

"Nah not even but I'm not trippin'. Do me a favor though, keep an eye on her. Make sure she gets home safe tonight."

"Sure thing bruh. You good?"

"Yeah I'm straight but I'm calling it a night."

"Aight bruh...ah...real quick... you want me to let you know where that cheesy ass limo drops her off at right?"

"Of course I do."

"Aight cool, just checking."

Curtis already had an idea of where she was staying but he needed to be sure. He could have followed her on his own but he didn't trust himself to keep his distance. DK on the other hand, despite his size, stealth was his specialty, and he was more than happy to help Curtis out.

Sophia passed the bar as she left she got herself a bottle of Prosecco. She drank it a lot now but how she was drinking it now wasn’t the way she drank it now a days. She was gulping it out of the bottle. The Hummer the girls had got for her was nowhere to be seen. It was nice outside so she decided to walk. She hadn’t drank straight out of a bottle since she found out about her cheating. Why did she have to bump into him tonight? She was feeling so sad about it all. She had thought she would marry him. She was heartbroken and still was. She was using Eric really and she knew it was wrong but she did like him. She knew when you got married you were supposed to be in love but following her heart hadn’t worked out for her so she was now following her head for security.

Curtis was the love of her life and probably always would be but she couldn’t go through a heartbreak again. She had a break down when she found out and it took her a few months to get back on track and then get herself in the circles she needed to be in to meet a man like Eric. She had worked so hard to get where she was now and she wasn’t going to let Curtis ruin it. Oh how she wished they could back to before he cheated and for it to have never happened. She was so happy with Curtis before he made the big mistake. She hadn’t hung around after finding out he had cheated to hear his side. She had left without telling him because he didn’t deserve notice because what he did to her.

She had drank half the bottle. Her head was feeling light. She felt a bit funny. She knew walking alone wasn’t very smart but she was sure she would be okay. Suddenly she felt a hand on her shoulder and when she looked around to see who it was, it was Johnny a rival of Curtis’s. “Oh boys look who it is Sophia. Sophia is Curtis’s girl.” Johnny said. “I broke up with him.” Sophia said a little scared. Johnny was with four other guys. “Oh really? Bet you want a taste of a real man now? Boys we are going to have some fun.” Johnny said. The other guys were commenting on her body and what they wanted to do with her. She was so scared. “Leave me alone.” She tried to shout but it came out in a squeaky quite voice. Now this was a time she wished to see Curtis. Although they weren’t together she knew he would protect her.

Curtis was halfway to the back door when his phone rang in his pocket and he almost didn't answer it. It wasn't Sophia, she still had her own personal ringtone since he'd never deleted her number from his contacts. Unfortunately, given his position at the top, Curtis couldn't risk missing a call that might be important so he reluctantly dug into his pocket as he came to his car in the alley behind the club.

"Might have a problem Fix," were Dk's urgent words, and given his tone, Curtis let the nickname thing slide.

"What kinda problem," he said, pausing with his key in the lock.

"Just spotted wifey stormin' out the front without her girls and she didn't get in the limo..."

"You mean she's walking?!"

"With a full sized bottle of Prosecco..."

"That fuckin' girl," Curtis groaned as he started his car and threw it into gear. "Which way did she go?"

"To the right...I'm following her like you told me...awww shit...you strapped bruh?"

"Of course, what's up?"

"Just get here quick," DK said, sounding winded before the line disconnected.

Curtis obeyed no traffic laws as he tore down the street, weaving in and out of lanes like a man possessed until he caught sight of DK sprinting. He slammed on his brakes long enough for DK to jump into the passenger seat. On his own, he reached into the glove box to pull Curtis' twin .40 caliber handgun, made sure they were locked and loaded as Curtis floored it to the next block.

Where he spotted Sophia being surrounded by a group of guys he knew to be reckless pricks. The car was barely in park before he jumped out, DK tossing him a piece as he came around the car.

"I thought I told ya bitch ass to stay off my block," Curtis said, conspicuously tucking the gun in his waistband. "Now I find you here, harassing my girl..."

"She said she ain't ya girl no more...makes her fair game right fellas," Johnny said and Curtis shift his eyes to Sophia. She was just mad enough to do something so stupid and if he wanted to he could have left her to the wolves. But even Old Curtis wouldn't have done that.

In an instant, Johnny and his boys found themselves on the wrong side of three guns. "Come on Fix you gonna come at me over some bitch that's not even claiming..." Old Curtis would have shot him for that, right on the street, but New Curtis calculated the consequences of his action. The chances of getting away with assault were far greater than murder and he made the decision quickly. In the blink of an eye, Curtis flipped the gun in his palm and brought it down hard across Johnny's jaw sending him sprawling.

"Get in the car Sophia," he said, grabbing her by the arm and pulling her around. He didn't give her a chance to deny him, shoving her into the backseat quickly and jumping in himself. DK followed suit and Curtis sped away. It all happened in a matter of minutes and he counted himself lucky that there were no sirens in the distance.

That didn't mean he didn't drive cautiously back to the club to drop DK off. "I'm sure you're friends are looking for you," he said quietly, without turning around. "Or I could take you home...to your place I mean," he added with a little grin, glancing at her reflection in the rearview mirror.

Sophia felt so stupid knowing she had let herself get into this situation. She was scared of what these guys would do to her. She knew she shouldn’t have been walking alone in this neighbour at this time of night. She was being stupid and she knew it. Her feelings after seeing him had overwhelmed her and she wasn’t thinking properly. She was being foolish. Her heart was aching once again over him. All she could think of is why couldn’t things go back to the way they were before he fucked her over? She knew she couldn’t let him back into her life because she would fall for him again. She missed him badly.

She was relieved when she saw Curtis turn up. She didn’t like him calling her his girl because she wasn’t his. She wasn’t a possession for him to own. She watched how he handled the situation so differently to how he would have a year ago. Maybe he had changed since the break up? She was glad he was here to protect her. If Eric was here she doubted he would protect her. He wasn’t a tough guy and couldn’t fight a fly. For once she knew she needed him in this situation and not Eric. Eric could not protect her in a situation like this.

“I don’t want to.” She said as he grabbed her arm and pulled her. He shove her onto the backseat. She had no chance of escaping or telling him to let her out. He drove off to the club. “I don’t care about those bitches. I never want to see them again they probably set up coming to this place because of you.” She said. She looked at him in the rear-view mirror as he looked at her. “Take me to my home. I want to go.” She said feeling herself start to get emotional. Sometimes when she was drunk she got emotional drunk and it tended to be over Curtis. She start to cry a little in the back of the car. She put her head in her hands as she cried.

There was nothing he hated more than hearing a woman cry, especially Sophia. No matter that her break in emotions was a result of her own poor judgement, overindulging, and a skewed sense of reality. He doubted very highly that her friends had set her up. In fact he wished they'd given him the same silent treatment as Sophia had instead of dirty looks and shouting insults his way whenever he encountered him in he streets. Curtis opened his mouth to tell her that but thought better of it, there was no reasoning with a drunk Sophia. But he couldn't just let her cry and he didn't feel right taking her own in such a state. He had an idea that he was certain she wouldn't like but he made the decision anyway.

Curtis threw his arm over the seat, reaching to touch her. Whether she wanted it or not, she wouldn't stop him from trying to console her. He made sure to keep his hand as neutral as possible on the back of her neck, running his fingers along the wispy hair at the nape of her neck. And he kept his eyes on the road, not trusting himself to keep quiet if he looked at her.

As he pulled into a parking spot on the far end of Brooklyn Bridge Park, Curtis realized this could have been a bad idea. They had a lot of history here, just like the club, but he only wanted to make her feel better. Aside from the Cyclone at Coney Island this was the best he could do. He turned the car off and shifted in his seat to face her, ran his hand over the back of her head.

"Look Sophia I know you think tonight was some kind of set up but I swear it wasn't. Those girls hate me almost as much as you do. They blame me for you disappearing off to high society," he said with a snort before he reached to take her hand, completely prepared for her to pull away. "And I meant what I said, I'm happy you found somebody that makes you happy...that takes care of you and treats you the way you deserve to be treated. I had my chance to do all those things but I fucked it up so I cant be mad at you for finding someone who will. And that doesn't mean that I'm going to just stop being there for you Sophia. Whatever you need...whenever you need it...I'm there."

Curtis reached into his jacket pocket for his handkerchief and tucked it into her hand. "So pull yourself together so I can take you home. Can't have ole boy thinking something bad happened to you tonight," he said, turning back to face the view of Brooklyn Bridge at night.

Sophia felt Curtis’s hand on her neck and he ran his fingers through her long brunette hair. She didn’t push him away. Right now she needed comforting even if it was from her ex-boyfriend. She continued to crying letting all the emotions of the night out. She was doubting her feelings for Eric even more tonight because she saw Curtis. Eric was safe and predictable but she didn’t love him like she loved Curtis. No other love would ever compare to her love for Curtis. She hated she loved him so.

Pulled up to a parking spot near Brooklyn Bridge Park. She spotted where they was and that brought a flood of over memories coming back. Brooklyn had been their playground. They had gone through everything in Brooklyn. Most places in Brooklyn they had memories and that was why she avoided Brooklyn like the plague. He shut the car down and turn to face her. His hand ran over the back of her head. She was slowly stopping the tears. Maybe she needed him in her life? He knew how to calm her down so easily when she was distressed.

He held her hand and she didn’t pull away. She felt he was genuine and honest when he spoke to her. She saw some change him in. She thought to herself don’t break now and let him back in. She was sort of glad to hear he was there for her. He passed her a handkerchief. She dried her tears away. “He’s away.” She said when he turned away. She was glad he was away she didn’t want him seeing her coming in like this. He knew very little about her ex and their past.

“Curtis I am sorry I went off on you but you must understand it is hard seeing you again. Thank you for coming to save me.” She said finishing wiping all the tears away. She was very thankful he had come to her rescue. God only knows what those guys would have done to her if he hadn’t come.

Finally, reason had returned and Curtis bit his lip to keep from saying the first snide comment that popped into his head. Instead he waited for her to finish wiping her face and smiled, "I appreciate the apology but it's not necessary...and you don't have to thank me for doing something when I didn't have a choice. I'm not some kinda animal Sophia," he said with a chuckle. "DK though...you might wanna shoot him a fruit basket or something for making him chase you for three blocks. You know that man hates running."

Curtis looked out over the bridge a moment, remembering the last time they were here. When he almost gave her that ring, but something had come up and he had to leave her. And she wasn't even bothered, simply kissed him and told him to be careful. She was a good girl and Curtis never thought he deserved her, but still he'd do anything to have her back.

"Remember that first time I took you to the club and we ate at that shady truck on Flatbush after," he said smiling at the memory. That when he knew. "I just knew you were gonna turn your nose up at it but you stepped up to that window and ordered the greasiest sandwich I ever saw. Plopped yourself right down on the hood of my car and chowed down...shit dripping down your arm...no napkin or nothing. It was amazing. I might have fell...never mind," he said before he got out and pushed the seat down. Curtis held out his hand to her, a sad smile on his lips. "Come on, Ms. Daisy hop up front so I can take you home...or we could grab a bit to eat, I mean since nobody's waiting for you."

“I do need to thank you. You could have left me because of how much of a bitch I have been to you. I know you’re not an animal and maybe I have been too hard on you tonight.” Sophia said as she ran her hand through her long hair. She crossed her legs leaning back against her chair. “Say thank you to DK for me too. I know he hates running.” She said with a laugh. DK was a good guy who use to look out for Sophia and he had been a good friend.

She smiled hearing him talk about their first time at the club and that dodgy food truck. They had had some very good times together and that would never change in her memories even though he cheated. “I am no snob and I would still eat it now. I am a lady but still can be one of the ‘boys’. “She said with a laugh. He lifted the seat up and held his hand out to help her out. She smiled at him as she got out. “Let’s go get some food. You probably will remember I am get quite hungry when drunk.” She said.

She got out of the car with his help. She smiled at him as she ran her hand through her hair. “I forgot how pretty this part of town is when it is night time.” She said looking around. Brooklyn had been her home for so long but now it was like a stranger to her. “Where we going?” She asked rubbing the top of her arms. She was a bit cold.

His heart skipped when she took his hand and stepped out of the car. He made a note to send some work Johnny's way for helping facilitate Sophia's change of heart before he reached back into the car to grab his jacket to drape over her shoulders. He wanted to put his arm around her, like old times but he didn't want to press his luck so he shoved his hands in his pockets instead, giving her a nudge to follow.

"The trucks are probably still out if you don't mind taking a stroll and eating on a bench like...I remember you used to love coming here at night. Even when I asked you not to," he said with a chuckle as they made their way through the grass to the footpath that ran along the East River. "You always did whatever you wanted and as much as it drove me nuts I always loved that about you. I hope ole boy understands what he's getting into with you," he said with a smirk, teasing her a little. Now that she'd calmed down Curtis hoped that they might actually be able to have a civilized conversation. Whether that lead to something more was something different. For now, he'd just enjoy the sound of her voice and the opportunity to spend time with her again.

In the past they would have walked hand in hand. She was glad he didn’t try to hold her hand because she had no idea what she would have done if he did. Their hands always felt like they fit perfectly together. She had always felt they were made for each other. She knew they would probably have still been together if he hadn’t slipped up and cheated on her. It was sad really that one stupid mistake ruined them.

“I would love truck food. I haven’t had it in ages and I crave it. You know I love greasy food when drunk.” She said with a laugh. She smiled at him softly when he said he liked her being so strong headed. “Well I am a bit different now with him. Things are expected of me when I am with. He is from the high society and there is rules in that crowd.” She said.

With Eric she wasn’t completely her real self. She played a perfect and rule following fake with him. She liked her new life but missed being her old self. She had lost herself. “How did you end up buying the club?” She asked trying to take the focus away from her life. She wanted to get off the topic of her new life and her fiancé.

"Ehh things change hands in the hood Soph, you know how it is," he said, being intentionally evasive. Had they still been together, Curtis would have told her the circumstances that led to his acquisition of the hottest night club in Brooklyn. Granted the proceedings were slightly more civil than he was used to, but still, there was nothing legal about it. His name wasn't even on the paperwork. As far as the government knew, Curtis Harris was a lowly promoter, not the proprietor.

He sensed her attempt to change the subject but he didn't fault her for it. Curtis didn't want to talk about her new man anymore that she did but he wasn't about to give her any insight into his new life. "Things are different now," was all he would say as they made their was to a line of food trucks parked in a lot adjacent to the park.

It was a far cry from what used to be here when they first got together. When there was only one truck, now there were about half of a dozen situated around a makeshift eating area of furnished with plastic tables, chairs, and a few wooden picnic tables.

"So pick you're poison," he said as the came to the entrance of the lot. "There's Mexican, Cuban, Jamaican, good ole American grease, and Korean," he said pointing at each truck to identify them.

Sophia could tell Curtis wasn’t really wanting to discuss how he got the club with her. When they had been together he had been so honest and open with her. He use to tell her everything. Their relationship had been solid before the cheating. She sensed he wasn’t wanting to give her an insight of his new life.

He told her things were different now. It sure was not just the place they were different. This part of the city had changed so much since they were younger. There was now places to sit and eat. They had use to sit on a wall or in his car. She felt so many memories and feelings coming back being back around this area.

“Um I am not sure. I crave Tacos so Mexican. There sure is more range now. It is use to be just good ole American greasy food.” Sophia said. She walk in front of him her hips swaying. “What you getting babes?” She asked sort of forgetting she was so mad with him. Being with him was so easy and she was comfortable.
