l sat in the back of the truck, my head leaned back, eyes closed tight as l tried to get the flashing images in my mind to stop. The president... or what was left of him on the ground. Dead bodies of both what use to be some of my partners and the secret service were scattered on the ground. And that was only inside the presidents office. It was worse outside. lt's been a week since me and my team were called to help take down the president. And we did... to bad they were to late to save Washington, DC. By the time we were done with him, the people had already begun to change.

"Connell!" l opened my eyes and looked forward at Sergeant Hugh, instantly alert. "We're here." He told me motioning around him, showing me the large base we were heading towards. l sat up, trying to keep my head straight as the truck came to a stop. l pulled my door open and jumped out, quickly followed by my Sergeant and a Dr. Hannah Miller. "So, where really in trouble, aren't we?" l asked Hugh as l looked around at the number of huge groups. All of them part of the military.

"Yeah." He mumbled to me as both me and Hannah stopped, stayinb by the car. Sergant Hugh though walked forward so he was facing everyone. He placed his hands behind his back and stood tall, trying to hide all signs of nervousness, even though he obviously was. "By now, l'm sure you all know why your here." He paused and looked around. "Dr. Rene. March 25, 2034. 7 days from today, he slipped a liquid drug in the presidents coffee. A drug that quickly took a great, strong leader and mutated him into something you should only see in your nightmares."

l closed my eyes, remembering how he had looked. The usual 6'2 tall man had grow to what looked like 8'6''. His face was... it was horrible! lf l hadn't seen him while he was changing, l would have never believed it was him. His eyes were a black color, his mouth, filled with a nnumber of large teeth. His skin stretched and torn as he grew, showing off what was underneath. His arms had tripled in size, looking like that of a body builder. The scene was enough to make anyone want to gag.

"That drug was then placed into the water system in the city. Now DC is over run by these creatures. All of them out for blood. We managed to shut it down, stopping anything from getting out, but we still need to destroy them." He looked around. "That's where some of you come in. You'll be sent to DC to try to stop these infestation before they manage to get out free. Mean while, some of you will be here, just in case we need backup on any thing." He looked back at me, motioning me with his head.

l stepped away from the truck and walked up to stand next to him. "This is Evy Collen! She is the one that managed to take down the president! " l flinched as he said this. "A lucky few of you will be going with her to find Dr. Rene! He was last seen heading torward New York. We need to stop him before he gets there and deposits the drug there as well! Those few people know who you are so l want you up here, front and center, now! We need to get this guy as soon as possible!" We both turned at the same time amd headed back towards the truck. "Call it in." Hugh said.

l moved my hand to my side, grabbing the walkie-talkie and bringing it to my mouth. "Where here and we're almost ready. Get down here now." I moved it back to the belt on my waist as l went to stand by Ms. Miller. "Don't worry. We'll find him before things get to bad." I whispered.

She nodded slightly. "I know. Andl'll do everything in my power to try to find a cure for what he's done."

A sarcastic sigh escaped the young man's lips."Great. Just great." Special Agent Mark Whistler had actually been planning on transferring to Washington. He enjoyed the work he did, but there was a rather uncomfortable situation...specifically, a girlfriend who couldn't let go. There had been an opening in Washington and getting away from his pyscho ex girlfriend had been a priority for him. It had made sense. A trained field operative hiding away in a usually quiet desk job for a while.

That wouldn't happen now, though. Some psycho had put a drug in the president's coffee and....well, Mark had a few friends in Washington; a couple of cousins, too. If they weren't dead, he shuddered to think of what they were now. But he quietly funneled his anger into something else, his face hardening as he marched towards the specialist who he'd been assigned to. Despite being a bit of a desk jockey, Mark had been in a family of marines who had kept him in excellent shape growing up even before he took the combat training required for his job.

How much will it help me against those...things out there? A team of agents fell into step behind him. With a determined look on his face, Mark nodded at the red-haired woman. Under different circumstances, he would find her attractive, especially now that he was..well...

"I'm Agent Mark Whistler." He inclined his head behind him. "We are all under your command, I believe?" Things were more then a little chaotic, with command and control still being set up with the destruction in Washington.

I looked at the man as he came up to me, followed by the others men. "Yes sir, all of you are." l pushed myself away from the truck and motioned to Hannah, raising my voice. "And this is Ms. Miller. She'll be coming along with us. All of you are to keep a eye on her. Make sure no harm comes to her." Hannah use to work with Dr. Rene so if anyone knew how that man thought it was her. That, added to her skills in a lab, she should be about to kind a cure. "We are to make sure she safe at all times!" l added

I turned my gaze back to him. "It's nice to meet you, Whistler." l turned my head up and looked at the military helicopter as it came into view, slowly moving towards the ground. "l really hope you don't die on me." It might have sounded a bit mean, but l was being honest! My team had about twelve people in it and after that fight with the president only four of then came out alive. Two of them were extremely wounded. l doubted any of these guys knew what they were getting into here.

Once the copter touched the ground, l reached up and grabbed my sun glasses, bringing them down over eyes, shielding them from the suns rise. "Now," I looked back at them. "I highly suggest, you all make sure you have what you need before you get on that plane. And anyone who isn't ready to die at any minute, should think about joining a different group." l warned them all before l turned to Ms. Miller and grabbed her forearm.

"Come on," I lead her over to the helicopter and helped her inside. "You all have ten minutes to get in here!" I called back as l helped her to a seat before l sat down next to her. She was still nervous, being one of the people that was left in the white house alive. But, she was getting better.

"Yes sir, all of you are." Mark watched as she motioned to a smaller, significantly less imposing woman near her; he didn't need to look closely at her to tell that she was a civilian, unlike this Evy. "And this is Ms. Miller. She'll be coming along with us. All of you are to keep a eye on her. Make sure no harm comes to her." Mark nodded as she continued. "We are to make sure she safe at all times!"

With the formalities out of the way, the specialist turned back to him.. "It's nice to meet you, Whistler."

"Likewise." replied Mark, his eyes drawn to the helicopter coming into view. "l really hope you don't die on me."

"Not planning on it." They'd all been briefed on the situation, but things had only gotten worse between their deployment and them hitting the ground; he silently wondered how much worse. Mark had read and been told about bad situations - his brothers' stories from Iraq and Afghanistan - but there was nothing like living it. He took a breath as the copter hit the ground; they weren't even in the air and already his adrenaline was pumping. It wouldn't do him any good to get all amped up before they got into the fight.

The sun's rise lit the sky as Evy met their gazes. "Now, I highly suggest, you all make sure you have what you need before you get on that plane. And anyone who isn't ready to die at any minute, should think about joining a different group." He stifled a wince at that statement, but he turned back to the men behind him.

"Check your armor and weapons, boys." He had already done his own; rifle in hand, armor and helmet securely strapped on, uniform perfectly done up. Again, the discipline of a military family helped him in that regard; father never let him out of the house unless his clothes were immaculately in place. Mark already knew where his ammo was, the feel of the radio on his collarbone near his left shoulder.

"You all have ten minutes to get in here!" came Evy's voice. She was pretty intense, another trait Mark filed in the back of his mind for different times. For normal times. Assuming normal was something they could ever get back to after an event like this....

"We all good?" he barked, and several nodding heads came back to him. "Base, Alpha team is heading out on the chopper with Conner and Miller." In what looked like a practiced motion, Mark marched to the chopper at the front, quickly making his way inside and letting the rest of the team strap in before taking his place at the front near Miller and Connell.

"We're good to go." He buckled in, leaning in towards Connell. "My understanding for this mission is that you decide what we do...I don't suppose our target is heading in a straight line to New York from here?" The comment was somewhat offhand, but the grim humor was an attempt to bring some levity to a dire situation. "I guess that would be too easy...."
