This is a thread for anyone whose interested in drama of any form. Feel free to post scenes from short plays etc that you're working on, discuss anything to do with drama etc. The world is yours!

:)

I've got to have some old sketches and stuff from a few years back. And I really need to try scripts again to keep in practice.

And somewhere in my box of notebooks is a huge paper on "Nudity as costuming choice" arguing for and against when to wear nothing at all.

I've written one play and am in the middle of two others.
It's so different to write from regular fiction, considering you're writing for someone esle to express through movement and props.

Oh Calcutta was one of your favs wasn't it? :D

And you have to have an ear for scripts too. the way it sounds out loud, with inflections, volumes, accents the whole freaking lot of it all.

and O Calcutta not so much but Equus was. That and Butterflies are free (seen it done as nude, topless and in lingerie) were the lack of clothing really lends itslef to the emotions of the scene and there is a reason to be naked, more than just to show off.

Hair depending on lighting too, but haven't seen a decent stage version of that yet.

I didn't see this thread when first posted and presumed the idea for it had not caught on.

I've never written any 'drama' but love the medium (and not just Elizabethan stuff :) ). I shall now endeavor to subscribe to this thread.

I love scripts and seeing someones words come to life through expression. It's an artistic thingy. Several minds working together to create a living moving scene and then the thought of having someone sitting there and relating to it is wonderful.
I love how I feel after seeing a good play.

I like your outlook on the nudity issue. Most people are still so prudish about it.

Well I am conservative (maybe -ish) on some things but drama and art there is more than just pink bits at stake here. There are emotions and feelings that go with being unclothed (vulnerable, ashamed, free, natural) versus nude (artisitc, uninhibited, safe, liberal) and naked (sensual, erotic, seductive, enticing) that convey what isn't being said by words and would be spoiled if spoken.

I love that new productions of "The Graduate" are having Mrs Robinson naked, just for a quick instant in sihlouette. It shows who she is and how she is going about it that can't be captured without teh camera beneath her thigh (like the movie shot).

I think nudity can be powerful but when needed and used rightly it is a necessity.

I really need to find that paper now. OR re-write it.

Re-write it, you can submit it under "How to" or Essays. I'd love to read it.

Well ther were three versions of it.

One was an essay, more of an academic paper. the second was a novella, with a woman struggling with whether or not to take a part that would alter her career tremendously but required a nude scene and then a script ( I was ambitious back then) based on the novella to really bring out the emotional attachment to the arguments as well.

I will say one thing though, I do think it is grossly unfair that the majority of nude scenes in plays and movies are for women. Granted women look better naked, but men face alot of the same insecurities about nudity and feel the same emotions (or similar though different).

Well then you have no excuse now do you?

I agree, too much censorship.

Ok ok I'll re-write it. I'll even start this weekend as my "death of a thumb" story is driving me nuts.

But you have to agree to read it before I post it to make sure I sound coherent and sane. Or at least reasonable facsimiles there of.
