Dr. Darius Gregory stepped out of the patient’s room, wiping the sweat off his brow. At 5’11”, well-built, with short, ruffled dark brown hair and a five o clock shadow, the sight of him wiping the sweat off his brow was enough to make half the nursing station fawn over him, even if it happened quietly.
The patient had just had a “code blue”, hospital speak for “his heart isn’t working/he’s dead”, and Dr Gregory had just finished bringing it back to life. He had been the only one in the room when it started and so he had begun the chest compressions until the help got there - and chest compressions are a workout. Once the other staff rushed into the room, Dr. Gregory stepped back and directed each person in the room like a conductor before an orchestra playing a symphony.
“Casey, 1 milligram of Epinephrine, now.”
“Sandu keep up those chest compressions, I want to see them deeper.”
“Ok, lets pause and check his rhythm.”
“Everyone clear - shock now.”
“Good. Clarissa please pull some blood, I want a BMP, CBC and troponin.”
Everything flowed perfectly, until the 65 year old man whose heart had stopped, started up again.
Darius stepped out of the room and smiled at one of the nurses nearby, who blushed. “I think he’ll be okay. We kept his oxygen levels up the whole time,” he said as he noted her reaction and walked on down the hall.
Since saving people’s lives was just his job, his mind quickly latched on to that nurse. She’s new... and... gorgeous. Darius liked what he saw.
And when Darius liked what he saw, he took it.
