California Representative Pete Stark has proven just what kind of double standard exists in the media and the Democratic Party.
On May 22, Stark was at a House Ways and Means subcommittee hearing on the correlation between marriage and welfare. He said the subject was ironic because of a "current House Republican Conference chairman whose children were all born out of wedlock."
That chairman was none other than J.C. Watts of Oklahoma. And the comment wasn't true. Although Watts' first child was born out of wedlock and adopted by an uncle, his five other children were all born to his wife, Frankie.
Two days later, an understandably angry Watts confronted Stark on the House floor, demanding to know why Stark had used his children to score political points. Watts' colleagues led him away from Stark. Onlookers say Stark was unapologetic.
Now the word is that House Democrats do not plan any disciplinary action against Stark.
I'll bet you haven't heard a single word about this until now.
Let's turn the tables for a second. Suppose a Republican had made the same remark against a black Democrat. Would you believe for one second that (1) the media wouldn't report it and (2) the Democrats wouldn't be screaming at the tops of their lungs for an apology? Of course not!
It's perfectly okay for Democrats to make derisive comments about Republicans--especially black Republicans. But it's a cardinal sin for Republicans to make any negative comment about a Democrat--especially a black Democrat.
This country's rehabilitation can't begin until Democrats sit down and shut up, and their friends in the media start reporting both sides of every story.
I'm not holding my breath.
