Steve Mahone whistled to himself as he drove the delivery van along a quiet suburban street. This was one of his favorite parts of his job, being able to get out of the store and drive around making deliveries. If anyone found out about how much time he killed just driving around when he was supposed to be working he’d have been fired a long time ago. It wasn’t that he didn’t like working in the store, it was just the freedom of driving through the peaceful streets that seemed to enliven his day.
He’d been working at Talber’s electronics for the last six months after graduating from college. He was taking a year off before deciding what he wanted to do with the rest of his life and selling electronics was a relatively easy job. Steve was mostly happy with his life except for the fact that he hadn’t had a date in over two months. It wasn’t that he wasn’t attractive, his long blonde hair and blue eyes had drawn enough looks from the ladies in the past to alleviate that suspicion. It was that most of the women his own age just acted so young. True, he wasn’t exactly the most responsible adult in the world but he did have a lead on most of the drunken idiots of his generation.
Glancing down at the invoice that sat on the seat beside him, Steve thought back to the couple who had ordered the television he was supposed to be delivering. They had come in Saturday morning when he was the only salesperson there and wanted to look at the selection of televisions. The husband had been something of a know-it-all; he’d obviously been reading all the latest A/V magazines before coming to the shop. Steve hated dealing with people like that, it was a television not brain surgery. As the husband had gone on about the resolutions of each different set, Steve had noticed his wife watching him carefully. Dismissing her glances as nothing out of the ordinary, Steve had continued to try and sell the couple a television. After an hour and a half of indecision, they finally settled on one. After paying for it, the husband had asked about the store’s free delivery policy. He’d caused some fuss when he found out that Steve wouldn’t be able to deliver the set until Monday morning but finally he calmed down and left the store. As she had left the store, the wife had looked back over her shoulder and with a smile told him, “I’ll see you Monday morning.”
Steve glanced at the address on the invoice as he turned into a driveway. This was supposed to be the place, he thought to himself as he climbed down out of the van. He ran his fingers through his hair as he proceeded up the driveway to knock politely on the door. “Hello, Talber’s electronics.” He announced as he saw someone moving around inside the house.
