I am pleased with my work; I certainly devoted myself to it, and I feel my efforts well repaid. But to be able to offer some small return on the enormous debt of gratitude I owe to my mentor means more to me.

But then, perhaps the two are one. I thought of him often while researching and writing, a kindly presence always there. To write a thing I am proud of is to do justice to his generous guidance.

What a coincidence. A couple of nights ago, Conan played the original recording of "Satisfaction" on Late Night, sticking NBC with the very expensive invoice for the rights to air the tune on national TV. I'm sure his sense of satisfaction was equal to - but different - than yours.
