The frosted wind blew into her face as she ran. Ran from lies and hated feelings of molestation. She ran, her yes forward, but always turning to look back. Not wanting to hear her footsteps behind her.

::No, I will survive this time. You can't hurt me anymore.:: She thought as she ran. There was not a bigger pain thanthan what she had just survived. Her body acked, her sides feeling as they would collasp in on her as she ran, searching for that one light, a door to knock on, a car to flag.

::Oh, PLEASE HELP!:: She screamed to herself, God, anyone that would listen in her mind. No one answered her prayers though. For years that had been the way life was. Eighteen years of terror. Eighteen years of pain.

But now she was free. And she planned to keep it. This was the last thought in her head before the twig she had not seen tripped her, making her fall. She fell on the ground, rolling in the mist that had formed on the groud, only to tumble into the street. Her head hit the pavement as everything went black.

Aaron

Aaron clenched his fists until the knuckles turned white on the steering wheel of his battered Ford F-150 pickup truck. He was flat broke, and had just been fired from his two day old dishwashing job when a stack of plates had crashed to the floor. No money, no prospects and his rent due in 10 days. Well, at least he had a full tank of gas.

Then he saw her. The fright in her eyes as she ran pell mell down the street. About his age. Screaming. Now just past dusk it was surreal the way the mist rolled over her ankles as if she were running on a Hollywood set with a smoke machine. Then she fell knocked low as if punched. And rolled into the street right in his path!

Aaron stood on the brakes, and swerved with all his might just missing her. He leaped from the car. She was comatose, and kept pleading for help over and over without even opening her eyes. Looking up Aaron saw a dark shape on foot in the distance, converging on them. He made a snap decision that would change his life.

He scooped her up and put her in his truck, swiping off the tools from the front seat. He did a quick U turn and sped off. His heart was pounding, his lungs gasping for breath. What had he just done? Paranoid he scanned the streets for signs of cops. He saw none. He wasn't home free yet, he still had 10 miles to go until he made it home ...

She felt like she were flying momentarily. Her head falling back as she let it take her, whatever it was. All she cared is that it released her, killed her, ending her pain.

"Help me." She cried. After a few moments she hear something slam, hurting her head and jarring her. Her eyes opened. All she saw at first was light. Numbers in light. 20-30-40-50.....a point ......the dashboard.

Her arms started flailing, hitting whatever service she was until she heard a voice. "Shh, calm down You are saaafe."

"Who are you?" she asking backing into the corner of the truck, her back pressed against the door. Her legs came up to her breast, protecting her chest so it seemed.

"Whhat happened to Laura?"

Aaron

As Aaron looked at her she woke up in a panic. Pulling her legs to herself in a fetal position, she looked abused. And frightened. What the fuck have I gotten myself into, he thought. I really don't need this, I've got huge problems of my own. He spoke -

"Look, I don't know any Laura. You damn near got yourself killed by rolling in the street in front of my truck. No one is going to hurt you as long as you are with me, ok? You asked for help back there and well, I gave it to you. I must be crazy. My name is Aaron, what''s yours?"

"Hey, I gotta know another thing. Who was chasing you and are they still chasing US?"

She thought about his questions. She had only remembered being called Candy all her life, but she was sure that wasn't her name.

"I am called Candy, but that isn't my real name. I am not sure what it is." She looked at him, eyeing him to make sure he was really safe like he said he was. "Laura was chasing me, but I don't think she is now. I cut some wires on her car after I excaped."

She looked at the outside, wondering where they were going. For eighteen years she had been in the same house, never anywhere else. "I .........don't know you, or where we are going, but I hope it is far from here." She said, tears coming to her eyes.

Aaron

He saw her tears, and was strangely unmoved by them. By the marks on her she was either a whore or an abused runaway. In either case, Aaron had wandered into deep shit. Silently he cursed again. Well, at least she had some moxie that was a neat trick with the car. He sighed. Then spoke -

"Candy it is then, until I think of something that suits you better. My place isn't far, although no one will know where you are. You will be able to disappear. "

He thought about what he had just said. Why did the thought of her being with him in secret excite him so? He checked Candy out again, his cold eyes raking her body up and down. Yeah, he'd fuck her in a New York minute given half a reason. Maybe for no reason.

Damn. He knew this was against the rules, his parole explicitly stated no women for the first six months. Well he just saw that parole officer yesterday, he was probably safe from for at least two more weeks. He was making bad decisions while still sober. This could not be good.

He pulled up to his so called "apartment". Underneath the raised railroad tracks in a tough neighborhood. His whole place shook every half hour as the massive trains ran above. When it rained the roof leaked in a dozen places. Looking both ways he saw no one. Aaron leaped out of the car, and led Candy in. Her eyes widened at the unkept sight.

"Home sweet home. Grab us a couple of beers, that's almost all that's in the fridge anyway. Stop your crying. Go on, now."

Candy

Flashbacks hit as she entered the house. It was dirty, something Laura would have never allowed. "Don't you ever clean up?" She asked hesitantly, grabbing two beers. She had never had beer, but was willing to try when told.

"I wasn't allowed to keep a dirty house. Laura would skin me for an ash being out of place." She felt her self begin to clean up a litte, a habit she had, scared of being hurt if she didn't.

Aaron

Aaron watched her clean a little then heard her explanation. He watched her with a combination of amusement and curiosity. Candy was impossible to figure out. Then again, why the hell should he try? This woman, barely older than a girl had been mistreated, abused day after day.

Laura sounded like a bitch. A dark plan began to form in Aaron's mind. But that would have to wait. The beer beckoned and clearly Candy had never had a beer before. Time to have a little fun at her expense.

"Candy, stop cleaning and come over here, sit right next to me. That's it. Now, let's relax a little and drink this beer. Just sip it. Don't worry about the initial taste, it gets better. Go on, try it! Wrap those pretty lips of yours around the bottle. Mmm, that's it. Now tell me about Laura ...."
