The afternoon garden party at the Dean's house was it's usual crashing bore, but attending was expected if not truly mandatory so here I was yet again.
Being single, not an unattractive and fit male had advantages, but as most of those attending were faculty wives that ended that.
I strolled and chatted with those I knew and then I notice a woman I didn't recognize who appeared to be by herself standing near the maze the Dean had in his back yard and moved in her direction. At the very least it would be nice to talk with someone new and not have to listen to the atypical political backbiting and maneuvering.
"Good afternoon. I'm Fredrick von Essen. It's nice to see a new face at one of these gatherings," I said quietly in my baritone voice as I extended my hand.
Oh it was such a bore to have to attend the Dean's extravagant party, especially with the weekend coming, but being the new private secretary to Dean Jr it was an obligation I was expected to fulfil. Tired of the constant corporate bravado I took time out to enjoy the rose garden by the maze... since ending my short-lived marriage to the elusive Marcus Hartley I was feeling seriously disillusioned with the usual jet set men I was accustomed to. My thoughts were interrupted by one extremely dashing Fredrick von Essen.
"nice to see a new face at one of these gatherings" he said as he extended his hand.
"Good afternoon Fredrick... Marcia Hartley-Jones" I replied as I held out my hand which he took and held onto for longer than was strictly necessary.
He seemed to be a real gentleman but I could see from the twinkle in his eye as he smiled at me that he identified with my hatred of these events.
"I was just admiring the rose garden, do you mind if we don't talk politics or corporate strategy?" I asked as I smiled back at him, knowing full well he wouldn't mind one little bit.
