Okay, crazy thought I just had. While it has died down (slowly) a trend for a while was to try and toss equivalency with the Dark Souls series (as well as Bloodborne and Demons' Souls) whenever a game with even the slightest difficulty spike came out: "the Dark Souls of dating sims, the Dark Souls of platformers, the Dark Souls of slot games..."
Short primer for anyone who hasn't played: Dark Souls is a third person hack and slash RPG series that is well known for its steep learning curve, dark fantasy setting, and social aspects (whether it's messages that are left giving you tips, pvp or co-op). Popular social media aspecrts are dissecting lore and finding increasingly ludicrous ways to beat the game (using a controller where every button is a banana being the current leader).
So what if that term got applied to other things?
The Dark Souls of grocery stores: Store where aggressive shoppers will charge you with carts and you must bring the cashier a special token before you can purchase anything (and instead of covenants you have loyalty programs).
Which leads to the point of the thread: what would the Dark Souls of erotica be?
1. Parody? Is it the story of a lone undead man or woman traversing the land to seduce and fuck ageless gods and other wanderers as they work towards linking the fire/their loins or finding another path?
2. Our lead suddenly finds that love and sex have changed their dynamics to that of a hack and slash game? Now you can have sex with whoever you want...but you better memorize patterns and get ready to dodge because encounters are now also much more lethal. Alternatively, the meta game allows outlets lead to become a stud overnight.
3. Setting? Dark fantasy world of ruined civilizations and a growing sense of finality. Even in the end though there is a need for warmth and lust.
4. Or something else?
EDIT: 5. Reading experience: really tough start, open to interpretation, lots of hours to get through but ultimately a satisfying experience.
