4 Stars. The end sux.
This is the novella that became THE BIG SLEEP, tho they have significant plot differences. A rich gals husband vanishes and Philip Marlowe looks for him. Carmen Sternwood isn't in this version. The story is actually better without Carmen but the end doesn't work.
Chandler wrote the screenplays for other writers masterworks. He knew how to write scenes and dialog.
