Katherine was happy to be on the road that crisp fall afternoon. The mountain scenery was spectacular, the autumn leaves shone in brilliant oranges and reds. It was the kind of day that made her feel better about taking the semester off of school to spend some time on personal reflection and her art.
Katherine or Katie as her friends normally referred to her was a gifted artist, and was enrolled in the fine arts program at a prestigious California university. Her preference to paint the wild places of America had led her here to the mountains of the pacific north west. The little used highway wound through the mountains offered amazing views at every turn. Today Kate was looking for a good vantage point to capture a mountain sunset.
An odd noise from under the hood of her little red VW Rabbit grabbed her attention from the scenery around her back to the car which seemed to be sputtering and losing power.
“Darn it...” she muttered under her breath as pulled the car to the side of the road. The engine stuttered, gasped and then finally died.
No amount of turning the ignition or looking under the hood could bring the little car back to life. She really wished she had paid more attention to her father and older brothers when they worked on their own cars but mechanical things were just not interesting to her. A quick check of her cell phone confirmed that she was in a dead spot and that it wasn’t going to help her out in this situation. “Oh well...” She thought to herself, “ no big deal someone will be along soon enough.”
