Melissa Trueheart was married off young to "the Strongbow heir", consolidating the two families vast wheat field holdings, miles from the nearest town.
Matt Strongbow's parents passed several years ago, now it is just him and her on the farm, in the middle of oceans of grain. Try as he might, she has not got pregnant. Matt is a taciturn man, obsessed with improving his crops, and Cornhusker football.
Though Matt goes to town at least weekly, months pass when Melissa stays alone, watching the crops grow. The migrant workers come through to sow in the spring and reap in the fall. She barely sees them, though she is expected to help their cooks put out meals.
The only other man she sees is the crop duster, who flies over their field weekly. Most weeks, he just is a streak in the sky, doing his lazy loops. Once in a while, he lands on the dirt road and asks Melissa for a drink.
Melissa dreams that the handsome pilot asks for more...
