Soon i will begin the mixing of the ingredients.

A splash of this.

A pinch of that.

A stir or four, or forty.

More pinches and dabs of this, that and the other.

More stirring, until the chemistry is perfect.

I will refrain from chanting "bubble bubble toil and trouble" as this is not what this is (this time).
<stifles a cackle>

No this time, it's a cauldron of a couple of gallons of tasty goodness.

Whatever it is, B, I'm betting it will be delicious, and make some lucky people happy. I can almost see the steam rising from it, and imagine the smells wafting through the kitchen. Come on, what is it?

spices and oils added to the meat of the fruit cooked to just the right consistency.

only if my eyes deceived me as to the fruit.

My nose, however, concurs with their assessment.

Ah, a little too specific. Fruit butter of some sort, perhaps. We just finished with a batch of pear butter. Our trees produce lots and lots of very small fruit, only good for eating for a week or so, but perfect for pear butter.

You were right, it is apple butter.

Our pears will be my next victims err...project :)

always go with your gut, or nose :)

Good advice. I was thinking apples and cinnamon, but not apple butter, for some reason. I guess because my mother, who grew up as a country girl in a large family, and learned to cook at an early age, and was good at it, never made apple butter, to my knowledge. You're a country girl, right?

Back in the hills, the local volunteer fire department (think hillbillies with fire extinguishers and funny hats) have a fall fund raiser where they spend the day making apple butter.

nb: They also have monthly spaghetti dinners, a big chicken cook in the summer, the occasional buckwheat cake dinner and a ramp festival.

Yes, I am country gal bumpkin through and through, and proudly so. :)

Your disdain for your roots disturbs and saddens me.

Also, they are volunteer departments and must raise a goodly portion of the money required to put out the fires when the meth labs explode...

I'm not surprised. I could sense it. By the way, my mother used to make fried apples with butter, sugar, and cinnamon. But not two gallons at a time. :)
