The Collapse of Biglerville HighYou may have seen this news:

A student and her mother are threatening to sue Biglerville High School in Pennsylvania over a letter sent home about how to dress at graduation. I love the letter. “Gentlemen: . . . PULL YOUR PANTS UP! Your underwear choices should be your own private choice and remain private.” “Ladies: . . . Choose modest attire. No bellies showing . . . Please remember as you select an outfit for the awards assembly that we don’t want to be looking at ‘sausage rolls’ as Mrs. Elliott calls them. As you get dressed remember that you can’t put 10 pounds of mud in a five-pound sack.” An offended student — the one threatening to sue — said, “You’re supposed to feel safe and comfortable here, and for a letter like that to come from the administration is really appalling.” Again, I think it’s wonderful. For too long, schools have kissed the butts of students, instead of telling them what’s what — instead of educating them. Schools have walked on eggshells around students — which is nuts. Biglerville High, of course, has apologized. What weenies. (Sausage rolls?) The school should have stuck to its guns and told whining students to grow up. Back in countercultural days — before the counterculture became the culture — people talked about “speaking truth to power.” We now have an issue of speaking truth to students. Bless the teachers and administrators who do it

You can sue anybody but it won't get anywhere. I think they could have worded it differently (there's no need for the descriptor of "10 pounds of mud"), but there's no sue-able offense here that I see. It's not like they named names. Actually, if you read the letter in the right light, its intent is to ensure a "safe and comfortable" environment for ALL students. There's nothing appalling about that.

BTW, I am originally from Pennsylvania but not near Gettysburg, although some family friends lived in Biglerville which is why this caught my attention.

I disagree that teh school did anything wrong

I disagree with the apology they offered

I disagree with the THUGS that are suing

(Didnt mean I disagree with you)

This is yet another reason why schools dont work

Okay. I mean, I agree with you. Just personally I would have worded it a bit gentler. There is a lot wrong with schools but how do you replace them? Most parents are only too glad to hand over 100% of their children's education to others. They are quick to criticize but yet they have no answers or seek to add anything they can like going to museums, taking trips to historical sites or National parks, etc.

get rid of students whose parents have an issue with the letter

get rid of students who are disruptive

etc etc
