I picked up a booklet at the liquor store that lists The 22 Most Important Cocktails Ever Mixed. I've had 16 on the list, and I haven't even heard of four of them. Gold star to the first person that can name all 22 cocktails. Or name your favorite cocktail, and how you make it.

I've been in a gimlet mood of late - Grey Goose vodka and Rose's Lime. I've never had a Manhattan before (2 oz whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura Bitters), but it sounds perfect for cool weather.

Brandy Alexander
Martini
Manhattan
Fluffy Duck
B52's
Q F or Quick Fuck

I'm lost after that... I never drink cocktails

I drink Scotch neat usually, or maybe some B&B. Old Fashioned, if made right, is a good drink. Gin and tonic in the summer.

Its been a long time since I tended bar but here are a few that are prolly on the list....

martini
manhattan
old fashioned
gin and tonic
rum and coke, bourbon and ginger ale, etc
whiskey sour (Maker's mark sours kick (my) ass)
white/black russians
irish coffee(a fav, prolly not on list)
margarita
bloody mary
pina colada
daiquries

side not: anyone heard of the "cement mixer"?

Mischka, you must try a gimlet with fresh lime juice. My dad used to have a beach house in Baja. They have the most amazing limes down there. We had vodka and fresh lime and it was so wonderful.

I've been into Cosmopolitans lately. Vodka, squeze of fresh lime, splash of cranberry juice - shaken in ice, poured smooth. Yum.

Ruby

I can't name all of the cocktails, but these are some drinks I like:

Cosmopolitan:
Absolut Citron
Triple Sec
Splash of cranberry juice
Splash of lime juice
Squeeze of lemon

Screaming Orgasms are good, but incredibly strong:
Equal parts vodka, Kahlua, Amaretto and Bailey's

Sloe Comfortable Screws are really good:
Vodka
OJ
Southern Comfort
Sloe Gin

How about a red-snapper, Kamikaze or Long Island Iced tea?
A Black Russian, fuzzy-navel or the sex on the beach?
Margarita, Bloody-Mary, SLOW.....GIN.....FIZZ. I can make it all on the rocks with a twist.

Concocting a truly good cocktail can be elevated to an art form. Sadly I have never had a quality Rum-N-Coke at a bar......rummies being my absolute favorite, of course. I've never had a good one at a bar because the coke used in them is the product of ......"the gun". The gun is the enemy of all carbonated refreshement and since it turns one of only two precious ingredients into syrupy yack, it is no friend of mine. I'm not picky......bottom shelf rum isn't great but it works. But that coke...oh, the horror.

Any bartenders in the house? My best guess is that "the gun" makes coke (rather than simply delivering it) much like any soda fountain does, mixing the syrup and carbonation on the spot. Fountain drinks are fly, but not consistent enough to make a good drink. Plus everyone knows that foutain cokes don't taste like bottled cokes most of the time.

now my guess for the 22 most influential drinks:

Margarita
Martini (traditional and Vodka)
Whiskey Sour
Tom Collins
Rum n Coke (Cubra Libre)
White Russian
Manhattan
Daqiuri (all shapes and flavors, though strawberry will always mean Daquiri to me)
Vodka Tonic

I can think of more, but not "classics".....I'm stuck.

the "blowjob" is a nifty drink......no hands, girls ;-)
I had an "oil slick" on my 21st birthday....it's rumpelminze and YeagerMeister. the yag flots on top like oil....
Flaming Dr Peppers are neat....and only available in ONE bar in New Orleans....The Goldmine. It's a hangout for underage drinkers :)

Well, if no one else cares to give this a shot I'd like to take peek at this list when you get back.....Ciao for now Mish ;-)

Oops. looks like plenty of you are giving it a shot.....i was first in line when i started to post....what a windbag.

Do you heat the B&B? Excellent date warmer upper drink ;) In so very many ways...

And beyond an occasional Cosmpolitan, I'm not much on mixed drinks. I'd go for a bourbon like Woodford Reserve (smooth), Knob Creek (feisty and interesting after), or an Elijah Craig... perhaps with one or two ice cubes depending on my mood... No cubes when I'm really focused on the taste experience. And for something light, a glass of peppermint schnapps with lots of ice is always great.

Sorry, Mischka... Congrats on those Horns!

White Russian

It's Sloe gin fizz, for the sloe berries that flavor it.

Mmmmm, White Russians....

I think I love you. ;)

Don't forget Harvey Wallbangers.

I have heated it before but usually have it room temp. Found out you only need about 8 seconds in the microwave, NOT 25  Grand Marnier is also great heated.

If you like Knob Creek, check out Maker's Mark, I prefer it when drinking it neat.

I don't do "cocktails" normally. My drink of choice is Black Velvet and Coke.

Sloe Screw (Always fun to order!)
Bloody Mary

Sloe berries? I had no flipping idea....I feel like a rube now! Purrrr-fectly embarrased by the sweet hottie with the whip...

There actually a story behind the beginning of my post....those are lyrics to a commercial...it's a horrible country rock tune urging you to call Louisiana School of gaming and bartending - the last line is: "There a school to attend
and I highly recommend,
you call 1/800 - Bartend."

I of course forgot that this was a local commercial and with the exception of one or two other folks here, NOBODY would have a clue what i was babbling about.

Harvey Wallbanger? I like the sound of wallbanging, but not with anyone named Harvey (excluding the giant rabbit, of course)... Vodker I can go along with, but what is galliano? Does it come in a big, long, container? is it lime green?

Big, long, and lime green.......now it all makes sense.

As a former bartender (damn, I've had some interesting jobs) I can tell you that you are right on. "The gun" works just like a soda fountain, combining carbonated water with syrup, except that it has all the heads in one convenient package. If you don't calibrate it, like nobody ever does, the result is what you describe as "syrupy yack," which I assume is different from a syrupy yak.

Why didn't you finish the bartending school radio jingle, Funboy? You know - the part that ends

"(something something) that I highly recommend
Call 1-800-BARTEND"

Actually it must be a franchise. I've heard the same commercial driving in different regions. Locally it's called the INTERNATIONAL School of Bartending. I pictured their graduates jetting off to London, Singapore, Rio... Or being air-dropped to little hole in the wall bars like the insurance adjusters on the GEICO commercial.
