I'm off to see them tonight, last time was in 1975. In light of the recent success of "roots" music, I'm expecting it should be good craic.

Oíche mhaith, Literotica. Review in the morning.

As far as I'm concerned they do not beat Flogging Molly.

Flogging Mellie?

Be nice, you.

But kinkiness aside, it was a great show. Far too short for me. Martin Fey wasn't there, but they had a terrific young fiddler from P.E.I. sitting in (he had the look of a punk--would fit in quite well with Flogging Molly). Derek was characteristically devilish with his quiet subversive demenor. Matt Malloy, Kevin Conneff (what a voice) and Seán Keane were all wonderful. And Himself? Paddy Maloney was wonderful.

There was a world-weariness that only added another layer to the patina. Next week they release their 39th album, in honour of their 40th anniversary as a group. Right up there with the Rolling Stones and the Dead.

When they came out, they did a couple of numbers, and then Paddy addressed the audience, in Irish, as though he had momentarily forgot he wasn't in the Gaelteachta--just like on a live album I bought twenty-years ago. Plus ça change, plus ça meme chose.

Fair play to 'em.

Glad you enjoyed the show - made me think of Quiet Galway pubs, drinking guiness, enjoying the craic and listening to the music - also reminded me of smokey Birmingham pubs; lock-ins to the early hours listening to some of the best Irish musicians I have ever heard - them were the days!!!
