I rented this unrated flick last night (on DVD) and was impressed by the acting, writing, direction, discovery-format structure, and most impressed by how un-erotic the graphic sex scenes were, which I think was the point. Sex is sex, but, ultimately, we all want "real", and the film was most erotic in the small moments when the guy and the girl are simply talking and getting very close to connecting as people.

People have compared it to "Last Tango in Paris", and I think there are some comparisons (in style and frankness), but "Tango" was about sex as a weapon to deaden the experience of being alive, and "Center" is more about sex as a commodity we purchase when what we're really after is closeness. I recommend the film for its daring and bravery and watchability, but mostly for the scene where the stripper pulls a lollipop out of her pussy and plops it in some dude's mouth. Definitely a "rewind" moment.

And if you've already seen it, you might be interested in the two "alternate endings" on the DVD. Very interesting.

Their web site, by the way, has won awards. It's very sexually graphic, and the interface is amazing. Here it is: The Center of the World.

very cool site dix

I was reminded of Atom Egoyan's movie Exotica. I think the girl in the Center of the World site looked a bit like our own Litizen, Mistress.

Sounds like an interesting movie, Dixon.

Is it available at Blockbuster, or do I need to go somewhere with an adult section?

Blockbuster will not carry anything above an "R", and that includes perfectly legitimate mainstream films that are NC-17, or unrated (which just means the studio said "Fuck you" to the Motion Picture Association" and didnt' make the film available for a rating). If you ever want to see the "unrated" verison of "American Pie" or the "Red Show Diaries" series, you'll have to go somewhere other than Blockbuster (or, as I heard someone call it the other day, "Lackluster Video").

For that matter, if you want to see an old MGM musical, a Charlie Chaplin classic, or anything Foreign, good fucking luck finding it at Blockbuster.

Does anybody know of any websites that do dvd/video rental?

I thought I heard about one starting up a while back.

facets

out of chicago does a subscription rental service. I've bought things from them, but never rented.

Sex as a weapon to deaden the life experience?

Maybe I'm simply feeling "too alive" lately.

Kotori, Exotica is on cable right now, I believe on one of the Starz or Encore channels. I will make a point to watch it.

And thanks DCL for the tip on this one as well! I am always on the lookout for something provocative and well put together.
