Imagine. You’ve lived your entire life in a cave. You’re not alone in this cave as you have friends there but you are trapped, chained to a rock and you can’t leave. In fact, not only can you not leave, you can’t even turn around. All you’ve seen, aside from your friends, are shadows flickering on the cave wall.
One day your chain breaks. You can get up, move around and find the cave’s mouth. You’re able to see the sun for the first time and you have a chance to see the people, animals and objects that exist outside the cave and who’s movement and passage causes the flickering shadows on the wall of your cave. It’s not as simple as that though, the sun’s too bright for you after all these years of darkness and it badly hurts your eyes. You go back into the cave to tell your friends that you strongly suspect there is a world and that the shadows in the cave are nothing more than a reflection of this other world. Your friends hate this idea, they’re upset and angry at your suggestion that the cave and its shadows is not as definitely real as they’ve always assumed it to be.
What would you do? Would you stay with your friends in the cave or would you dare the blinding sunlight and leave the cave?
