Obviously, any castrato character would have to be of legal age, but even Farinelli sang publicly until he was thirty-two, so it's certainly doable. I don't think they had their balls. I could be wrong, of course, but simply removing their penis wouldn't restrict the production of testosterone, which is what had to be done to keep their voices boyishly high.

Yes, I am pretty sure that it was the testicles, not the penis, that were removed. They didn't have technology to replace the penis for its other purpose: urination.

From what I've been given to understand, the chances of a castrated indivdual being able to get it up are directly proportional to physical maturity at the time of castration.

Thus, it's rather unlikely that a castrati, who would have been castrated quite some time before puberty, to be able to gain an erection.

A eunuch on the other hand...

A Eunuch is simply a grown man who has had his balls removed, they are used to guard the harem, or female preists dependiong on where you are talking about, they are fully grown before they lose those so everything is in proper sizes.

The reason for a Eunuch guard of the harem and preistesses is for one simple reason, they won't get pregnant. Not so much to keep them virginal, since harem girls are always deflowered the first night, why they are in the harem still.

Preistesses generally were supposed to either stay virginal looking, or just not get pregnant unless it is for a special occassion type thing.

Most Eunuchs did not have anything else shortened unless say it is for a punishment, usually reserved for rapists or boyfriends of the sheiks daughter that he does not like. Though that to varied, sometimes they just became a Eunuch, sometimes they just get shortened.

After that, he doesn't care, they can run out and screw anything moving or not so long as they don't get pregnant and can perform for him when he wants.

See the problem with your thinking is nobody talked about it, but when you get down to the nitty gritty of it, a eunuch can get hard, he just can't have children. If you get a harem consisting of more than say 3 women, they will be left wanting sex, and who better to get it from than the guards.

Interesting points. One tends to get the impression of an unfair double standard (okay, that's redundant, as if there was such a thing as a fair double standard). Evidently, however, the only thing that the Sultan doesn't wish to share is the conception thing.

My only experience with Islamic polygamy is much smaller in scale, namely private citizens with maybe two or three wives. Very few had even four.
