It was Friday at 5, and Eric Landon sat back for a moment at the desk of his tiny office in the Hart building. Though small and dank, he was glad even to have an office, for an office was status, because this was no ordinary building. This building was joined by the endless maze of tunnels to the other office buildings, then to the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, and of course, the Capital building, where his boss The Senator toiled away for his far off district.

He had been The Senator's Administrative Assistant (AA) for some time now, and he controlled the office like an old pro. Besides the Senator, there was the typical brew of 30-something senior assistants, 20-something junior assistants, schedulers, and gophers, and of course the college interns. The new flock of interns had just arrived for their term, still glassy-eyed and dazed at the spectacle that greeted them everyday. Those interns were just finding out the little-known truth of the place: most were single or divorced, almost everyone drank like a fish, and all lived the job in an endless 24 hour cycle, whether they were working, playing, partying, or even screwing (actually, especially if they were screwing).

It was time to introduce the new interns to the office tradition. At 5 on Fridays, the front door locked, the barrels of booze came out from the closet, and everyone took some time to drink and blow off some steam. It was absolutely essential to preventing the massive turnover of most offices here.

Eric wanted to get to know the new bunch, and see what was going on with the seasoned gang. Slamming the barrel of iced beer bottles down on the floor, he picked one up, and called for attention.

"Alright everybody, it's Friday time!" He cracked open the bottle of Sam Adams (what else?) and took a long drink.

"So, who's here?"

Samantha had never been much of a drinker; she cast a slight grimace around the room as the other interns snatched their bottles and immediately started into it.

She had worked too long and had too much self-respect to let everyone see her get drunk, so she stayed in her chair along the wall, rifling through some of the forms and letters she needed to file by tomorrow morning, trying not to be distracted by the ever-more relaxed group around her.

Before long, the Senior Administrative Assistant - her direct boss - had come over and sat beside her. Resisting the urge to put her papers away in respect, she continued her work, hardly ackowledging he was there for the first few moments, until he started pushing her to "loosen up."
