The Brontë sisters or Jane Austen, who was superior?

I think Charlotte Brontë was the best of all of them, Jane Eyre may be mushy tosh, but Villette is so relevant it may as well have been written yesterday. The feelings of disillusionment and the struggle for life are heartfelt and sincere. Austen's works are mere commentaries of society, and have no real characterisation; the characters live in small worlds and are horribly snobby and have no passion whatever.

And it's pronounced Brontë, not Bronté.

No it isn't! the "ë" symbol is pronounced exactly the same as "e", you only use diaresis in words such as naïve to show that it is pronounced seperately. "é" has the pronunciation "a", effectively.

Jane Eyre is hardly mushy tosh. Its one of my all time favorite books, I've read it at least twenty times and I've been considering opening it up again soon.

One of my other all time favorites has to be Pride and Prejudice, again I have to disagree with you. The characterisation was very real in this particular story and they had passion. You could feel the tempered desire that Mr. Darcy and Lizzie held for each other.

All that said, I prefer Charlotte Brontë as well.

I personally prefer Austen but Charlotte Bronte's work has more depth and pathos. The two really can't be compared as they're work is vastly different.

Jane Austen.
"Sense and Sensibility" has always been a personal favourite.

I prefer Austen, however I would not say she is better. I really don't see how you can compare the two, as they are so different.
