Luna was named for the moon and had grown up sheltered and protected. When she was nineteen, a man named Jonah came to the house, serious and strong, older than Luna. She could hear daddy talking to the man at the kitchen table, and she could hear her name mentioned over and over as they spoke. Momma was there too, standing in the doorway, and Luna could see the tears running down her face.
When they called her into the room, Luna already knew what was happening. She was scared and sad, but resigned to her fate. Momma had prepared her for this. Her eyes were locked onto her new husband, her new life.
When they drove away, she watched her childhood disappear into the distance. Then she turned to Jonah and for a moment studied his face. He seemed to be a reasonable man.
"I'll be a good wife to you, Jonah," she said. "Momma was good and she taught me everything."
There was one thing momma hadn't taught her. Luna drew her hand to her neck, fidgeting with her necklace. She wore a cotton dress, homemade from blue calico, that came down almost to her knees. Her long auburn hair touched her shoulders. She swallowed nervously before she spoke again.
"I've never been with a man before, Jonah." Now her eyes trained on him, a deep piercing gaze. "But I'm not scared."
