THE BRASS CUPCAKE by John D. MacDonald
4 stars
It was his first hardcover book. Came out in 1950.
The setting is Florida, in Tampa, and another city that reminds me of Clearwater in 1950. The other city was fictitious and didn't exist given where MacDonald placed it in the story, but it seems like Clearwater. I was raised there.
The story: An elderly rich woman moves to town and is murdered, and close to a million in jewels is stolen from her, too.
The insurance company gets involved and sends an agent to find the jewels and make a deal with the thieves. SOP is pay the thieves more than they'd get fencing the jewels, but less than fair market value. The agents fee is 50 grand.
The story sux at the beginning but improves as things unfold. Lotsa violence. Lotsa sex. Lotsa treachery and deceit.
A brass cupcake is cop slang for a lost badge. The insurance agent is a fired cop of the city where he's investigating the jewel theft. The PD doesn't like the man, and makes lotsa problems for him.
