From The Times (London) Thurs 23 May 22002
"In unusually candid remarks yesterday, Colin Powell, the US Secretary of State, admitted that Mr Bush “had never been involved in this level of international interaction or diplomatic activity” before winning the presidency. Mr Powell added that the President learnt quickly from two key blunders early in his term: his withdrawal from the Kyoto climate change accords and his bellicose reaction to China’s impounding of an American reconnaissance plane."
OK, I thought to myself, give the lad a chance, he's only disrupted a fairly stable world equilibrium whilst he had "hands on" experience in running a country.
Beginners make mistakes don't they?
Then I saw this piece of arrogant rubbish in the same article...
"PRESIDENT BUSH will use an historic speech in the German Reichstag today to demand that Europe wake up to the threat of global terrorism or risk catastrophic attacks such as those on America nine months ago.
He will urge his European allies to stop carping at America and to throw themselves wholeheartedly behind his War on Terror. “I will remind our friends that this war is far from over,” he said on his departure from Washington yesterday."
This bit of advice from a man who has had to face one major terrorist attack on home ground from a foreign aggressor, talking to countries who in total endure hundreds per year.
He hasn't learnt much after all has he, I thought, he still needs to learn how to make friends and influence people...
It's no good, no matter how hard I try and give him the benefit of the doubt Bush is determined to make me dislike him.
He now stands equal in my mind with Margaret Thatcher, that other great disrupter of social and political stability...
And that's saying a lot...
