From The Times (London) Thurs 23 May 22002

"In unusually candid remarks yesterday, Colin Powell, the US Secretary of State, admitted that Mr Bush “had never been involved in this level of international interaction or diplomatic activity” before winning the presidency. Mr Powell added that the President learnt quickly from two key blunders early in his term: his withdrawal from the Kyoto climate change accords and his bellicose reaction to China’s impounding of an American reconnaissance plane."

OK, I thought to myself, give the lad a chance, he's only disrupted a fairly stable world equilibrium whilst he had "hands on" experience in running a country.

Beginners make mistakes don't they?

Then I saw this piece of arrogant rubbish in the same article...

"PRESIDENT BUSH will use an historic speech in the German Reichstag today to demand that Europe wake up to the threat of global terrorism or risk catastrophic attacks such as those on America nine months ago.

He will urge his European allies to stop carping at America and to throw themselves wholeheartedly behind his War on Terror. “I will remind our friends that this war is far from over,” he said on his departure from Washington yesterday."

This bit of advice from a man who has had to face one major terrorist attack on home ground from a foreign aggressor, talking to countries who in total endure hundreds per year.

He hasn't learnt much after all has he, I thought, he still needs to learn how to make friends and influence people...

It's no good, no matter how hard I try and give him the benefit of the doubt Bush is determined to make me dislike him.

He now stands equal in my mind with Margaret Thatcher, that other great disrupter of social and political stability...

And that's saying a lot...

That's low, unfair, cheap, demeaning of America...

If someone had managed to take down a landmark of such scale, oh, excuse me, the NHRE has no such thing, we would be there doing what we are doing now - FOR YOU!

For love of freedom!

Pray tell. Would you still bitch then?

Are you French?

Good article PP especially highlighting Bush's ignorance that accompanies his arrogance...I could see an SNL spoof about him complaining about attacks on America completly discounting this has been a problem in Europe for some time....yes, I do believe his knowledge of foreign affairs is that limited and that is sad...

Still, the biggest point:During Pres. Bush's one year in office he has watched the Middle East completly distable....like you said rookies make mistakes....

LOL p_p_!

An unexpected admission!

Surrender now or feel the full force of my wrath!

What? With the full weight of the NHRE behind me...

I should cocoa!

So when you surrender, you'll be bringing booty too, eh?

Thought that would get you...:D

'I should cocoa' is English slang meaning 'I don't thinks so', but for chrissake don't ask me why.

I've got no idea...

"Boy, is a white racist word."

Brother of Kid Dynomite!

I'm sure the up&up politically correct general would never use such phraseology...

Ah...

It all becomes clear...

We don't notice racism in the UK, we just live it...

And accept it...

And for the most part, ignore it...

It's become one of the facets of our culture.

It is demanded that you pay special attention to skin color. Even written into law...

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin...

I've seen a film twice this year on TV. I can't remember the name or the actors but I thought the message was very powerful...

It was about the rape of a black man's grandaughter by two white, I suppose you'd call them red necks. After they raped the girl they threw her from a bridge 30 feet above ground level and then drove off leaving her to die.

But she didn't.

The two men were caught and were being escorted, manacled, in the courthouse when the grandfather killed them both with a shotgun.

OK that was the set up. Grand Dadddy of course was arrested on the spot (there were plenty of people around who witnessed it) and he appointed, yep you guessed it, a white lawyer to conduct his defence...

The rest of the film was the trial with Black Activist Movements offering to get the best legal men around for the defence etc etc... They were all turned down.

Towards the end and before the closing speeches the white lawyer asked Granddad why he chose a white man.

And Granddad said that no matter how liberal a white person was they still see the color of a man's skin. And he wanted a defense which, with that 'handicap', could still see him that way. Because only then he would know he was getting the defense he wanted.

One where there was no falseness in seeing a man's color and pretending you don't.

Don't worry nearly finished...

Anyway the white lawyer's closing speech was brilliant and the actor who took the part should have had a mention at the Oscars just for the way he presented it...

He took the all white jury through the crime. A nine year old girl, kidnapped by two men, and then beaten senseless and thrown over a 30' high bridge and left to die...

The court was silent. Jeez even I was silent and I knew it was a film. Then he said...

"Now think of that little girl as a white child"...

I admit Synthysis I felt a shock wave go down my spine. Because listening to that lawyer I was accepting what he was saying but I didn't see the full implication of the words. Until that last line.

Clever line...

Anyway just thought I'd mention it.

:)

By the way...

if anyone knows the name of that movie, let me know.

I've told many people about if but they can't rent it out without the title...

Thanks folks...

:D

I want to say Mississippi Burning was the movie. I know i've seen it though as i recall the ending.

Bush

O.K. so Bush is still a Texan. His attitude on terrorism may offend you and the European community but it makes sense in front of the American public who need a leader who will get their asses off the hook.

Recent remarks re. reforms in Cuba before the embargo is lifted illustrate this. Promote American intrests and social values before all else. St. George will slay the dragon.

Not in the same pot with Margaret Thatcher yet, I hope, but possibly headed in that direction. Honestly I cant see Bush as a master of international relations at any point in the near future but I can see his need to be deciededly American before the American public. U.S. election year as well, note massive support for U.S. farming intrests.

History has not placed on Mr. Bush's plate the meal he was expecting and he will have to scramble to make up the diference but I think he still has a little time in his pocket.

If youve ever seen his "townhouse meeting" stuff on U.S. Television you will know he plays to the American public first and foremost. Thanks

Well I've found the book of the film...

"A Time To Kill by John Grisham" is a story that could be told in any time-frame, in any location and involve any two races of human beings. But John chooses to tell this story in Mississippi, in the 70's I believe, with the two races of African American vs Whites.

Tonya Hailey is the 10 year old daughter of Carl Hailey. Tonya's mother, Gwen has sent Tonya to the neighborhood store to pick up a few items. While returning home, Tonya is abducted by Billy Ray Cobb and Pete Willard."

Though the film changed the characters around, grand father and grand daughter instead of father and daughter

The thing is he didn't do anything to try and stop it.

He had that 'we shall not see harm come to Israeli' thingy to uphold.

Until Sharon told him to piss off and Crown Prince Mohammed popped in for tea.

Bush could have had far more influence over Israel if had acted, but he didn't...

Hey Raw, Isnt it amazing how some forget that Clinton was a rookie in 1993? At least Bush was the Governor of a state that bordered a foreign country.

I seem to remember a couple Mid-East leaders signing a Peace Agreement on the Whitehouse lawn under Clinton... people had tears in their eyes and everything.

But a few people knew it wouldn't last.
