I'm open to suggestions.

After sampling most of the Swiss and Russian chocolate at my local grocery, I was surprised to find I ranked Hershey's way up their with the Lindt and Toblerone.

Hershey's has good tooth resistance and excellent mouth feel, a deep, dark chocolatey taste without any fruity or milky notes and finishes clean without coating your mouth.

A lot of people like Ghirdelli chocolate from San Fransico, but I find it waxy with a distinct cherry or anise note, the kind of thing you find in dark chocolate, although without the bitterness.

EDITED TO ADD: Oh jeez, Earl! I'd forgotten! I really am sorry.

Lindt Lindor, the wat the middle just trickles down the back of your throat as you bite through the soft chewy outer shell...

I don't call'em orgasm chocolates for no reason.

(Sorry Earl...it's not long now though love!)

My favorite candy is Cadbury's Rum, Raisin and Hazelnut bar.

I haven't ever found any Cadbury's chocolate (or any of their other candies) that isn't superb.

I prefer milk chocolate. Sounds like dark's your thing, so can't help.

So, true EL. Its absolutely Heaven....

(Earl, sorry. Promise not to mention chocolates again. You're almost there though :) )

Proper, hand-made Belgian chocolates. Forget the rest :p Every once in a while I stumble across a small shop that sells them, and I end up spending a fortune. Champagne truffels are my favourites. :D

I don't have much of a sweet tooth.

I prefer my sweets to be the female variety.

For the diabetics and low carbers, I highly recommend Pure De-Lite Hazelnut Truffles. Hell, they're good regardless.

I've seen them in GNC, and they're available online from www.netrition.com

Hey Dr M and all the chocolate lovers (and apologies in advance to The Earl)...

The absolutely best chocolates ever made anywhere ever are Stam Chocolates. You can find them on the web at www.stamchocolates.com.

I was so very fortunate when I lived back in Des Moines. I met two men from my (wonderful, ecclectic, neurotic) neighborhood that were opening a chocolate store. One of the men, Ton Stam, was from Amsterdam where his family has been in the chocolate world for years and he had agreed to open a store in Des Moines and sell the family chocolate there. It wast the first store in the states and has been wildly successful , even earning it's own feature on the Food Network.

I have a strong love of chocolate and still (6 years later) can eat no more than 2 of them at once because they are so overwhelmingly amazing. My eyes roll back in my head and I am blissed out while I am eating them. Friends and family bring me Stams everytime they visit and I order them by phone as gifts for really special people.

Check out the website, but if you're going to order, call them. Use the number for the store located on Ingersoll Ave, it's the main office. You can order an assorted pound or more that will be a regular assortment. But if you're a dark chocolate lover (or milk or white) and you call, they will custom pack a box for you.

My most favorites are the dark strawberry creme. It's not all mushed and blended sugary crap. It's a layer of thick, sweet cream and a layer of strawberry preserved wrapped in the most decadent dark chocolate and shaped like a perfect strawberry. Also, all of the liquor chocolates are fabulous. It's had to choose just one. Or two. Or twelve. Hehehe...

By the way... Godiva chocolates taste like wax covered turds in comparison. No offense to the Godiva people, of course.

I love Toblerone but don't find it much around here. As a substitute I like Hershey's Nuggets Extra Creamy Milk Chocolate with Toffee & Almonds.

I think this thread has made me hornier than any sex thread we've ever had. :)

You too, huh?

Cadbury's is my absolute favorite, always has been...but I don't care for dark chocolate at all.

Lindt have a creme brulee chocolate that's petty orgasmic. Their vanilla white chocolate is disappointing.

Belgian chocolates have a reputation of being the ultimate, though I don't see what all the fuss is about.

I tend to eat the kids Mars bars and Snickers. And white Kit-Kats.

I'm a big fan of Dark Chocolate. Most of what I get is Hersheys. Not too bad. Lindt, or Lindor Dark Chocolate is the best I've had though. (Nothing goes better with a good cup of black coffee.)

i cant believe you people havent said godiva!
dont normally like chocolate but godiva gets me every time.

I've never ben able to comprehend the appeal of white chocolate.

For plain stuff, I know that the Dr. doesn't like it, but I love Ghirardelli dark sweet. Yes, it has a fruit tone to it, but I find it goes well with the dark, and its silky-smooth texture is deeply seductive. Much depends on freshness, however; I've sometimes gotten it when it was not as fresh, and the experience was much impaired.

For fancy things, I recommend Vosges chocolates. (I assume you are all capable of Googling such an unusual name.) Their Naga truffles - chocolate, coconut milk, and a dusting of curry powder - are stellar, as are the Black Pearls (dark chocolate, a hint of wasabi, and a sprinkle of blackened sesame seeds). They're quite dear, but sophisticated and deeply delicious.

If you happen to live in or visit San Francisco, the chocolate shop on Fisherman's Wharf is alarmingly good, especially for a tourist spot. Vast swathes of truffles await the heady explorer.

(And I, too, have given up chocolate for an act of discipline and sacrifice, so this whole post is by way of a subtle bit of masochism. ;) )

When I eat 'just chocolate', I prefer the really dark variety. If I buy it locally, it's usually Lindt.....either simply plain, or a nut variety. Whenever a friend or family member is off to France on one of their very regular trips, all I ever want them to bring back is a pack of dark French chocolate - either plain, brazil, hazelnut.......I can't eat much at once, its too overwhelming, so a pack of 5 bars will last me ages. *drool*

Someone must be due for an overnighter to France. Anybody???

Dark Chocolate
The perfect balance between bitter and sweet romance.
All the benefit of indulgence
But with the acute awareness of an intoxicating option
That you've foregone.

The chocolate we always have in the house is a Green and Blacks, a very dark, bitter, firm-textured organic chocolate, that's so strong it works like an espresso on you. Nobody at home really likes it, which is why we always have plenty of it in the house; the crap stuff gets gobbled up immediately.

Nestlé own everything in the world.

Toblerone is surely one of the strangest pieces of design of all time.

And why is it always sold in airports? After I've travelled for 14 hours acquiring DVT and listening to endless "security" advice that is nothing of the kind, eaten a piece of dried chicken and watched a Tom Hanks movie three times, before I brave Customs and wait an hour for my suitcase to meet me, do I really want to break off to purchase some triangular chocolate that will bruise the roof of my mouth when I eat it?

I find high-quality chocolate is normally too much for the tastebuds - or maybe I'm just low-rent trailer-trash in the chocolate stakes.

The finest chocolate bar of all time is Cadbury's Old Jamaica - a rum-and-raisin infusion with a nice picture of an old galleon on the front. You can't get it much any more, but it's sooo worth it when you find one.

mmmmmmmmm

Chocolate isn't "supposed" to taste sweet.. Hershey chocolate is mostly sugar.. From what I understand real chocolate is more like coffee, bitter and an acquired taste. I never been a chocolate fan but I absolutely hate when European cats tell me American chocolate sucks..
