Baron Leopold or Leo to his friends had just returned from four years in the Holy lands fighting the Infidels in the Crusades. He had been eager to get back a lot sooner than this considering what he had waiting for him at home but he had not been able to buy his way out of duty like some other knights so he had been forced to serve for the full term before he was rotated back to England.
It was only through the grace of God that he had survived hale and whole when so many of his brethren had perished or come home hideously scarred, but now that he was home he only had two things on his mind. His marriage to Tatjana and settling in to his new castle, both of which he should have done before he had been sent away on the pointless bloody war.
His Father had died just before he had been sent to the Crusades and indeed he had been on his way to take control of it when his orders had caught up with him. If he was a suspicious man he would have believed the two were not coincidental, but he had sent his trusted squire with his orders to take control and run it in his stead until he returned. He had also sent word to his betrothed and her father explaining the situation but promising to return at the earliest opportunity.
Over the next four years he had sent letters to both his squire and his betrothed Tatajna. He had received spotty replies from both but he had expected that, but from what he could tell both were doing well and she was waiting for him and his estates were doing well.
It had taken him two weeks to ride to his betrothed's father's castle and as he approached he did not look his best. He had gotten off the boat and headed straight here and was still dressed in his white and red crossed halberd and chain mail with heavy plate. Strapped to his horse was his lance, broadsword, short bow and his quiver, while he had his longsword and dagger on his hips. As he approached the castle he straightened himself up in the saddle and made sure the shield with his crest could be seen.
He was hailed before he reached the gates but once they worked out who he was he was quickly ushered inside and welcomed by the castles seneschal.
"Baron Leopold if we knew you were coming we would have prepared a welcome. The Lord will be overjoyed to see you as will the Lady Tatajna but first I think you would like to freshen up. Allow the boy to take your horse and I will escort you to the baths and arrange for some more respectable clothes. You can meet everyone for dinner."
Leo nodded at the man and dismounted. As the stable boy came up to take the reins he stopped him. "Careful boy this is not an ordinary horse. He is a trained warhorse and would have your fingers off in a second. You have to treat these horses with respect." He patted the neck of the big stallion and rubbed it's ears. "Go with the boy Roanan and behave yourself." the horse blew softly in his ear and then walked off behind the boy.
Leo then followed behind the man. It would be good to feel clean again.
