The scene takes place in the Old West, during the 1860's. The land is being bought up and sold to traveler's from the east, and the remaining Native Americans are being driven out of their homes. The Sioux tribe of northern South Dakota is one of the few left, and they're determined to remain there. However, one of the richest bankers in town is also a very stubborn man. He has dedicated his life to taking the last of the tribe's land and selling it to a large corporation from New England who would like to expand into the Dakota's. The banker, Frederick Tuttle, is a ruthless man, and not liked by many, not even me....his own daughter.
IC:
I walked into the lobby of the bank, smoothing the skirt of my pink silk dress over my hips, and then tugging up the long white gloves I had on. Reaching up, I straightened my white hat, tucking a few errant strands of hair back underneath it. My hair was in a long braid down my back, but a few tendrils had freed themselves. I knew my father wouldn't appreciate a disheveled appearance so I did the best I could to make myself presentable. Making my way towards my father's office, I thought of what I was going to say. I had to convince him to give me the money I needed for my trip out East. My best friend, Rebeccah, was going to New York to shop for the upcoming town dance and I just HAD to go with her. My life here in the new territory was boring, and I wanted just this once to be excited. I missed New York, and loved the old city more than anything, yet my father refused to move back there. He had some huge deal working here in this godforsaken land, and my mother and I had been forced to accompany him. He'd promised that I could go home to visit and shop, yet since we'd been here, almost a year now, I had not been home once. That was about to change.
Smiling at Emily, my father's buxom secretary, I let myself into his office and sat down in front of his desk. His face was buried in a pile of papers, and not once did he glance up at me. "Yes, Beth, what is it this time?" he growled.
I crossed my legs at the ankles, and gathered my now faltering courage. "Father, you know what it is. I still want to go to New York. You know I'll be safe, and that Rebeccah's parents will watch over us. You promised me a year ago that I'd have plenty of opportunities to go home, and not once have you allowed me to!"
This time he looked up at me, a scowl on his once handsome face. "Elizabeth, I've told you and told you it's not safe for a lovely young lady such as yourself to travel across this savage-filled nation alone. Your place is with your family, and when I decide that it is time for a trip to the east, then you will go. Then and only then!"
"But, Daddy! I won't be...." my voice trailed off at the look in his eyes. Standing behind his desk, he towered over me.
"Dammit Beth! I have made my decision! The answer is no and will remain no! Now, go home and make sure your mother is taking care of dinner! We're having guests and I will NOT be embarrassed again by her lousy cooking and housekeeping skills. Go!"
Jumping to my feet, I turned and fled from his office, my hands going to my cheeks to wipe away my tears. Emily rose from her chair, but I didn't even glance at her. My dress flapped behind me as I ran from the bank and into the dusty street. Turning toward home, I continued to run, not caring if I looked ladylike or not. I was so furious that my reputation be damned! That was all my father cared about anyway, our family's "reputation" in this tiny town. He didn't even care about me anymore!
I started across the street that intersected Main and suddenly I was being grabbed, my arms encased in strong hands. My feet left the ground, and I was then laying across the back of a horse, my stomach flat against the animal's bare flesh. Too shocked to scream, I felt the horse take off at a gallop. The wind caught my hat and tossed it behind me onto the dirty ground. I had no clue what was happening, and by the time I'd realized I'd been kidnapped, it was too late.
