Do you know (or care) about the background and reputation of the band/artist behind music you like?

Lots of people like U2's music but won't buy it because of their politics for example.

I have some Chic Corea, but I won't buy any more of his music since I found out he's in a cult. I won't dump what I have though.

Motley Crue has/had some good music, but I don't like the abusive behavior of the members.

I stopped buying Cat Stevens' music when he went crazy.

Sometimes, if I like a song or album, I don't really want to know too much about who wrote or performs it, so their background won't taint the music.

Only if artist has a rep as racist or Glitterish does that stop me from supporting their music.

When I was a kid, I thought Michael Jackson was the bee's knees. As I grew up, he grew weird. I can't say if I just outgrew his music or if the man's increasingly creepy private life had anything to do with it.

I heard Nikki Sixx jacks-off a lot.

I won't buy Kanye's music because it's fucking atrocious.

I don't buy it b/c it doesn't exist.

A few years back, was in movie theatre, & "radio" introduced an something from an upcoming "a-capella" version of Jay-Z's latest CD. I said aloud, "Meaning it's no different from the first one."

Interesting, just had an off stage conversation about this yesterday with a musician.
We were discussing various musicians and what makes them unbankable or not.

What gets played, covered up and/or recorded was very much in control of the record companies until recently. In LA, certain things seem okay and others not. Kinky seems okay, addiction acceptable, being a complete ass, adultery, but domestic abuse not.

Nashville rules are a bit different.

My favorite Artists are decent people, so there is no choice for me to make there.

Oh yeah, after seeing a free Charlie Daniel's band performance where he talked about murdering people, put confederate flags on the big screens and the audience stood, hands in the air like at the Nuremberg rally, I will never go near anything to do with them.

People walked out, security came in, it was downright terrifying. Sometimes I forget that the State of Minnesota was once known as a highly racist and anti Semitic state and their descendants still live here.

Saw a great movie a few years back about "payola" scandals for what's played on radio called "Telling Lies In America"... Starred late Brad Renfro ("The Client"), "Mr. Six Degrees" Bacon, & pre-"Ally" Calista. Still have the VHS, but don't know why I ever bought it or last time I watched it. (Now I may have to.)

As for comment about faves being decent, I gotta believe that's only what you believe, not proven fact... Also, I have no clue that those things aren't handled (covered, etc.) by managers & things the way the radio play was in the old days. ("The radio plays what they want you to hear..." = "Sell Out" by band that opened a "Fest" nearby earlier this year)

Nah, a good jam is a good jam.

Plenty of epic/classic tunes of every kind have been written by all manner of scum sucking shitbags.

Abusive drunks/druggies galore...

Wife beaters....

Cousin/kiddy fucking weirdos....

Murderers.

You name it....they are out there.

They can stay out there... And out of my CD collection.

It depends how well you know your faves, bandmates and managers :)

I have met some musicians who I knew right off that they were bad news but I would imagine a majority of them are working stiffs like everyone else. They also seem to be a very gossipy bunch, just like lawyers...

Better not dig very deep then because there are a LOT of fucking weirdos in the music world/industry and what you might find out about them may shock you.

This is true, I know of quite a few musicians who have been abusive drunks/druggies. It may not make the media like Clapton until Patti's book came out, but the people they work with know about it.
Lots of them have procurers too, that is always a tip off.

Roadies, costumers, drivers, managers, promoters, lighting crew, they usually all know.

It depends on the level of asshole compared to the level of brilliance. I know Miles Davis was a dick, but he was a genius. Phil Spector is a murder, but made brilliant records. They both get to stay.

The bassist from Phish likes little girls and Phish fucking sucks, so they're OUT.

Michael Jackson is right on the line. Off the Wall and Thriller are so damn good, and I do believe his upbringing and abuse a a huge part of why he turned out the way he did, but its still hard to rectify.

I can forgive a drug addict, and mostly feel sad for them and those around them. Sly Stone will alway be tragic, but I love those records and always will.

Paul Simon is a prick, but c'mon those records form the 70s are amazing.

You do all the digging you want... When you find out you have been too high on the seeds & need to create the bad you want to see about a person, admit it, & get over your pessimism.

I'm still waiting for a Netflix documentary or something to get Jacko's doctor out... Michael committed suicide before he went out on the next tour... In every city, "Jacko" would find "Jacko-orJim" to "Jacko-off to".

Johnny Cash?

The Wu Tang Clan?

Metallica?

Elvis?

Michael Jackson?

The Beatles?

Rolling Stones?

You're the safe one, not liking real musicians or getting anywhere near any Bush outside of the ex-Presidents.

Or are you too much of a cokehead to remember the last time you listen to the Backstreet CD & got off on their videos?!

Yea, just cuz most of the impressionist were total fucking lunatics doesn't mean they didn't generate some great paintings that mean all sorts of things to BILLIONS of people.

Mozart? LUNATIC!! Still arguably a decent composer....

Yeah. The idiots are guys like Beethoven, composing music they can't listen to & therefore have no clue if it sucks or not.

Oh please tell us all how Johnny Cash is not a real musician.

I'm sure we'd all like some enlightenment on that.

I'm asexual, bush interest me about as much as going to the dentist.
