I was flipping through channels just now and was unlucky enough to catch the end of "The Bachelor." I would have changed channels had it not been for the morbid fascination I had with the show -- like rubbernecking at accidents when you don't want to, but can't help it for whatever reason.
Television has had some pretty terrible stuff on, but to me, this takes the cake (unless I'm having a serious lapse of memory and have simply forgotten somethying more disgusting). I saw four women sitting on sofas while a man stood at the front of the room with three roses. Apparently, whoever gets the rose gets to stay and play "possible wife" for another week. I could see the looks on these women's faces as they waited to see who would be chosen and who would be rejected. What's worse is that only one was left out. Why not make it two, so she might not feel quite as dejected?
What's even *worse* is that this show even exists. I wouldn't want it to be one woman choosing between many men, either. They may call this "reality TV" but nothing could be further from the truth. People do need to choose who they are going to marry, but this seems unnecessarily cruel to me. I could see the thoughts running behind the women's eyes as the roses were distributed: "Is it going to be me? Is it going to be her? Oh, god he's looking my way. This could alter my life! Oh no, he's looking more at her. Does he think I've been worth it? Or have I failed? Was this all for nothing?" Nobody needs to feel that way in front of an audience.
I'm disappointed and disgusted.
