THE BABY ON THE ICEBOX by James M.Cain.

The baby's name is Ron. His mom is Laura. Laura's husband is not Ron's dad. Ron's dad is a snake oil peddler who stops by the gas station/diner/motel Laura and her husband own. They also exhibit big cats like tigers and mountain lions. Ron is in the refrigerator because a Bengal tiger is loose inside the diner.

The narrator says the end makes no sense unless the reader knows what happened from the start. And that's very true.

Cain's geat talent was dialogue (and tight composition), most oif this story is dialogue with some observations by the narrator. Its a strange but plausible account of marital treachery. Hollywood made a movie of it, SHE MADE HER BED.

In or On?

I'm curious and don't really want to google it right now.

THE MONEY AND THE WOMAN or THE EMBEZZLER 1938 by James M. Cain

It comes with 2 titles as many of Cain's books were magazine serials before hardcover.

The bank corporation sends a troubleshooter to a branch bank to snoop. The spy finds embezzling by the branch manager. The branch managers wife then seduces the spy. Its detail d tutorial about how to embezzle cash from a bank. It wouldn't work today with electronic records .

For 1938 the sex is graphic. I was surprised. I admire how well Cain depicted the wife's con of the bank spy. She was brilliant. She used sex appeal to make big money loans to customers. She knew how to play men. There's actually more sex in this book than in Cain's last book, THE COCKTAIL WAITRESS., published after Cain died in 1977.

I recommend this book for the expert son/seduction.
