Here’s some interesting numbers: of the 66 stories entered in the LITEROTICA contest 26 were 1 page long; 17 were 2 pages; there were 5 stories 3, 4, 5 and 6 pages long. Finally there was one story 8 pages, one 11 pages long and one 12 pages long.

Apparently so! As of right now the three longest stories are the three highest rated. It’s very clear that our reading public likes the big boys!

And of the thirteen highest rated stories only one is under 4 pages long. The rest are all 4 or more pages long.

Which means that 12 of the 18 longest stories that were entered in the contest are among the top thirteen.

Of the 48 shorter stories entered (3 or less pages) only one of them cracked the top thirteen.

So ladies and gentlemen may I suggest that in the next LITEROTICA theme contest you keep writing until you've got at least 8" on the table...

First off let’s all of us agree on one thing – they were all too long!!!! 8,11,12 pages for crying out loud! If all 66 contestants had been so inconsiderate we’d have had some 660 LITEROTICA pages to read to get through them all! Almost 2 and ½ million amateur words!

NO THANKS! In fact A.I.R. has now instituted a rule limiting contest entries to 4 pages max and encouraging writers to stop at 3.

And of course we all know that contestants enter these long stories to ensure higher scores. People who think a story should be rated 1 or 2 or 3 generally click out before they get anywhere near the end of these over worded stories. Which leaves only the “5 voters” on the last page. The three winners in this contest took this strategy to new heights this contest.

It should also be noted that two of the winners (amoveablefeast and the dentist) used another unfortunate strategy to ensure more 5’s – they ran around ‘commenting’ favorably on other contestants stories (even when they hadn’t read them) hoping that this would be reciprocated by those they complimented. They weren’t the only ones to utilize this underhanded practice (tinytim, patiently and others tried the same thing) but they were among the worst practitioners of it. A.I.R. has now put in a rule banning contestants from making comments on other contestants stories during the contest.

I haven’t read the winner – the Sci Fi story. Apparently very few people did! It was one of the least read stories in the contest. The average readership for contest stories was approximately 25,000 views – the median about 20,000. The winner had only 8500 views! And seeing how long it is we know from experience that an 11 page story is almost never read in one go. Meaning that the actual numbers of different readers is probably a quarter of the view total.

In fact this story doesn’t stand out anywhere – low VIEWS, low VOTES, low COMMENTS, low FAVORITED … and yet it supposedly won! RIDICULOUS!!!! Should have been in the bottom quartile…

The second place finisher wasn’t much better (but at least some)! Average number of views, votes, comments etc. But just that – AVERAGE! Should have come in around 30th place…

So what propelled it to the top? Well much the same strategy as the winner – write a very long story most people won’t get to the end of, comment favorably all over the place and write in a category that is generally marked very highly (in this contest every MATURE category story was scored 4.66 or higher – only outscored by the SF category).

The third place finisher is the most intriguing. Quite frankly he probably should have won the contest. Except for the excessive length. But there are questions.

Who is this guy or gal? Is he an ALT of a regular or is he truly a brand new LITEROTICAN? Supposedly this is the first story he’s ever submitted to the site. A virgin!

If true it’s an extraordinary result! 60,000 views … 400+ votes in the EC category … 40 comments … 66 favorites … We have writers on the site who have submitted six, seven or eight hundred stories and have never achieved numbers like these (i.e. ace).

I don’t think any of us at A.I.R. or at ScouriesWorld have seen anything like this for a first story in our over eight years compiling site numbers. It’s “mungo park” like! Does he have a blog somewhere that he promoted the story on? Does he have a mailing list that he advertised it on?

It’s “scouries” like! My god, could Mr Butterfield simply be a nom de plume for LITEROTICA’S #1 author? Could it be possible…​

All of the legitimate short story contests I know of give maximium word lengths (and they don't even have the "unfavorable voters will tend to drop out" phenomenon we have here and that seems to have become common knowledge). Those max-word counts generally are 3,500 words (one Lit. page) and rarely over 5,000 words (one and half Lit. pages).

I'm also not opposed to asking entrants to refrain from commenting on and voting on other contest entries--or advertising their entry in the feedback forum--until the contest is over.

Laurel has lumped me with him, so I thought I best check him out. And sure enough some of his posts about the Web site make sense (although he's not as much the originator of these ideas as he claims to be--Laurel has shown the ability to ignore suggestions from whole bunches of regular forum posters over whole bunches of years, not just Souries).

If we're going to address long stories being an advantage and want them erased, fine.

But then we should move onto the ultimate advantage; writing in a low voted category which is a huge advantage come sweep time.

So we can't eliminate certain categories that would not be fair so the sweeps would have to be changed to some sort of sliding scale that would even out their affect on 100 vote and 1000 vote stories.

That will never happen, nor will chapter series ever be removed from the monthlies, or long stories banned from contests, or a bisexual category, or a new theme contest to replace Earth day or.......

Absolutely and people could lock into what they like to write/read scoring would be way up I bet.

But that would take more work and its not going to happen.

The voting system is flawed simply because the human element is conducive to cheating and game playing. The sweeps are also flawed inherently because of the different vote totals for each category. The sweeps are also very much a "secret" as to what they really look for.

And the human element is not limited to the readership and other authors.
