Julie had it all, or so most people thought. She was nearing her final year at a prestigious college, one that both her athletic and scholastic aptitude where paying for. Being on the cheer squad, as well as her athletic skills made her popular with the jocks. Her academic skills and willingness to embrace their quirks, made her popular with geeks. Now all she had to decide was what she wanted for her future. The first summer, in a while, away from her fiancé, was a good thing. She could use the time seeing to her uncle’s tenant to focus on what was best for her, and not her fiancés political aspirations.
The little bell on the door jingled as he entered the small coffee shop. The woman behind the counter looked up and smiled at her newest customer, Julie seated at one of the few tables gave a cursory glance then returned to her magazine. She was expecting to meet a woman And the middle aged man that entered was clearly not that.
He could see that the proprietor of the shop was showing more interest in a potential client, and someone she did not know, than would be normal. He suspected she was too old to be the woman he was expecting to meet, but he smiled none the less as he approached the counter.
The younger woman, on the other hand, he suspected was who he was looking for. She had given him a quick glance, most likely a reaction to a noise, when he had entered before returning to her magazine. She looked perhaps half his age, and was definitely absorbed in the advice that her woman’s magazine was passing on to her.
“Hi I am Ivan,” he said to the proprietor, “I was told to meet a Julie here, is that perhaps you. I was just told by my client’s assistant, that I would meet her here,” and his smile broadened with a hint of charm, “and the local who directed me here, said I could get the best apple pie as well.”
The older woman blushed at the compliment about her pie. “No I am not Julie, I am Mary the owner of this little coffee shop.” She indicated to the young woman sitting at the table, who was still too self absorbed to know she was being talked about, “that is Julie, her uncle owns one of the houses on the lake.”
Ivan nodded, “yes, that would be it. I am renting it for the summer... well rather my client is, but she will only be joining us in a few days, when she completes her latest project.” He turned to the younger woman, “then I guess I better interrupt her thoughts.”
Mary laughed softly, “I will be back in a bit, with some coffee and apple pie,” she said before heading into the back room.
Ivan made his way over to the young woman seated at the table. She had finally heard her name mentioned, so was looking up at him as he made his way towards her. Now she was perfect he thought, bright eyes, full lips and a pair of breasts that could be easily notice in her dress. He also noticed an engagement ring on her finger, a large diamond indicating the giver was a man of means.
“Hi I am Ivan, I believe you are to be my chaperone while I am renting your uncles house.”
That had been the deal. They would get a reasonable price on the house in exchange for allowing the niece to act as a live in landlord. He looked down at the topic of the article she was reading. “Five ways to know he is cheating,” he read out. “There is only one sign that points to the truth.”
