My idea for this thread was to do a traditional high fantasy setting with a slight twist.
The characters are all citizens of the Damus Empire. Not too long ago, a group of sailors discovered a chain of islands in the south. Though perfectly inhabitable, they seem to be bereft of humanoid life. The islands have been named the Arkon Islands after the reigning emperor. The sailors brought back samples of gold, exotic spices and fruits, and silk taken from monstrous spiders.
The emperor has decided to colonize the islands before any of his rivals learn of this discovery, but the monsters inhabiting the islands and the potential for rival nations to invade means that colonists and a few soldiers aren't going to be enough to protect the land. A call is made to adventurers across the kingdom. A handsome salary is promised, and the contract with the empire will be anulled once the colonies are fully fortified and established.
Though most adventurers prefer not to give up their freedom and ruin plundering to go to a group of islands to do the dirty work of a ruler, enough have signed up for the colonization to go ahead.
Four ships were sent out to colonize the three islands. Two ships went to the largest island, Dalle. The other two, Umbria in the south and Cahra in the east, each have one ship landing at them.
As the story opens, the ships are due to land on the beaches in the afternoon. The adventurers and colonists have been mingling and getting to know each other during the journey so they can better work together in this new land.

Name: Gabriel "Shadow" Ardam
Age: 24
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Appearance: Gabriel stands tall and lean, reaching 6'2" tall and just over 150 lbs. He has long, flowing black hair that hangs across his back and chest in wavy raven tresses. His eyes are an unusual color, a rusty brown-red that seem to change hues slightly each time you look at them. His skin is always somewhat pale, and his finely chiseled features giving him a very striking appearance that compliments his natural good looks. He moves very slowly and fluidly, never in any rush, and speaks in much the same manner with a rich, velvety baritone voice.
He always dresses in black and dark grey, seldom seen without his floor-length black coat and wide-brimmed hat, both of which never seem to move in the wind. He's also strangely loathe to remove the fingerless gauntlet from his left hand.
Backstory: Gabriel was born to a village apothecary in the mountains. No one ever learned who the father was, and Gabriel's mother died in childbirth. Upon his left palm was a birthmark of a horrible symbol, the Sign of Blood. It was considered the unluckiest of evil omens in the region, and the people considered killing the child until a local soothsayer stopped them. The soothsayer proclaimed that evil is not inborn, and must be learned. If the child were raised properly, he would bring no harm to the village.
The infant Gabriel was sent off to a monastery where he was raised to adulthood. During his stay at the monastery, Gabriel learned the nature of his birthmark... and the powers that came with it. Countless hours of research revealed to him that he had been created by some supernatural creature impregnating his mother. Such creatures were more often than not demons or other dark entities, and their progeny had more often than not gone on to achieve immortality in infamy.
Refusing to accept such a fate, Gabriel left the monastery and began travelling, honing his powers and skills, fighting darkness where ever he found it. He become a slayer of demons and a dark hero who simply called himself "Shadow."
When the proclamation of the new colonization expedition came out, Gabriel recieved a vision in his dreams that some of the answers he sought could be found there. Trusting his instincts, Gabriel signed up for the journey and scrounged up what supplies he could doing some exorcisms in the coastal city where his journey began.
