In 1776, the Spanish Monarchy formed the fourth viceroyality to govern their colonies in the Americas. The Viceroyality of the Rio de la Plata was formed from the far reaching southern colonies of the Viceroyality of Peru. King Charles III appointed Pedro Antonio de Cevallos as the first Viceroy of Rio de la Plata and sent him to the capital of Buenos Aires to begin his term as Viceroy.
Lost to history was that King Charles III was concerned with the state of the colonies given that the British Colonies in the Northern part of the Americas had just recently declared independence. The King was concerned that the colonies under the Spanish Monarchy might begin to rebel as well and wanted to make sure that the formation of this Viceroyality went smoothly. So as a sign of solidarity with the colonies and interest in their well being, King Charles also sent with The Viceroy his 21 year old son, Prince Antonio Pascual.
Antonio, being the youngest living son after the passing of his little brother, Francisco, five years prior, had always been a lover of the arts and considered himself later in life to be a humanist, being so far from the line of succession to the throne that he didn't really get himself caught up in being a monarch. He found himself having more in common with the servants that with his royal brethren. When his father mentioned to the family that he wanted to send a member of the Royal Family with The Viceroy, Antonio jumped at the chance, dying to see the world outside of the royal palace.
The Viceroy, Antonio, and the army appointed to them arrived in Buenos Aires just in time for the summer to start in January 1777. Upon arrival, after meeting with the local government, it was announced to the locals that while Antonio had been given no control of any of the government affairs, he was to attend all of the government meetings, as an ambassador of King Charles' good will. Having no problem with this, the local government prepared the guest wing of the newly completed estate of The Viceroy for Antonio to reside in privacy during his stay, given a number of servants to attend to his needs.
As Antonio was being escorted by the butler given to him, Javier, to his bedchamber, it was explained to him that given the Prince's youth, the local government felt it fitting to set him up with a local companion to keep the prince entertained during his stay in Buenos Aires. After the servants finished assisting the prince in placing his personal effects in his bedchamber, Javier returned with a young woman.
"Prince Antonio, this is the companion that I mentioned earlier that the local government has assigned to you during your stay here in our fair city. It is my pleasure to introduce to you..."
