Spanish explorers named it the Amazon after they were repeatedly attacked by groups of women warriors. They named it after the legendary women warriors of Greek mythology.

California was named for the same reason. In a popular Spanish adventure book of the time the queen of the Amazons was called Califia. Actually it's unlikely the people attacking them were female, just natives with very long hair.
