Well I never thought I would see the day that I would get hung up on an online game, but it has happened. "Words with friends" is basically online scrabble and is free(there is a pay version as well, but I deal with the pop ups) You can play friends or random people.

It occurred to me that as authors this can be a fun exercise as well as a game because we're always using words and looking for new ones.
Then I thought about....A competition. A just for fun tournament amongst the authors here.
How will it work? Sign up for the game however you want to play it, phone, PC, tablet facebook whatever. Sign up using your lit username so we can find each other. Then....
We wait a few days and get a list of people who want in. When we have our list I will draw names out of a hat and pair people up to play each other. In the event of a odd number, the last name drawn gets a bye that round.
I will post who is playing who and the person drawn first starts the game.
All you do for that is click start a game and search by username then you start. This plays just like scrabble including being able to swap tiles or skip a turn. The game handles the scoring and will tell you if it is a valid word.
Once the game is over you come back to the thread and post the final score and who won. Score is important because if there is an odd number of winners (14 people= 7 pairings+= 7 winners) then highest score gets a bye.
Now we can say once you have lost you are out or we can go with the (say) 6 winners play each other and six losers play each other so a double elimination.
We go until we have one ultimate winner. Who wins.....bragging rights until the next time.
I figure what is cool about this is that it is not a story challenge and takes very little time and effort. This way if people want to do the next fawc, or need time for Nude day or are writing for survivor this does not interfere.
Also even if you're crushed at work or like myself at the moment have some r/l crap going on you can still play. It is also a good exercise(I've seen a lot of words I have been "oh, come on" then I look them up so it helps with vocabulary. It's a good distraction and most of all its fun and we can all have a good time busting each others balls-in a friendly manner.
The games are allowed to last for days(not sure how long) so time limit is something we would impose, but honestly a game can usually be played over the course of a day unless you have no internet access for some reason.
One thing I will add. Like everything else on the net there is a words with friends "cheat" app. We are all on the honor system here and I would hope no one would do that.
So anyone interested?
