This one... 20K and counting, which should probably worry me more than it does.

How much misleading of one's readers is too much?

I've noticed that I've left some pretty convincing breadcrumbs which imply that two locations might be the same one. They aren't and I've done it completely by accident. Now I'm picturing pissed off readers

I love being confusing, I mean ambiguous.

Nothing wrong with 20K+. My primary Winter event story was a tad over 30K. My (prize winning) entry to Nude Day was 27.5K. I like 20K+ stories. Of course, I'm mostly writing novels now when not writing those.

Hemmingway wrote about 500 words a day, so don't be too hard on yourself...

Neil Gaiman on Terry Pratchett in the endnotes of Good Omens:

He wrote four hundred words a night, every night: it was the only way for him to keep a real job and still write books. One night, a year later, he finished a novel, with a hundred words still to go, so he put a piece of paper into his typewriter and wrote a hundred words of his next novel.

Nothing wrong with 20K+. My primary Winter event story was a tad over 30K. My (prize winning) entry to Nude Day was 27.5K. I like 20K+ stories. Of course, I'm mostly writing novels now when not writing those.

Honestly, I was worried at first. Not so much the how many words, but the jump from 6K in my first to this.
Now I'm just worried about how damn long it might take to finish.

I'm far from done, so a lot could happen, but my best estimate is over 40K under 60K.

I expected my first story to be around 30 chapters all told. The first book in the series (which is maybe the halfway point of the original imagined story) wound up being 49 chapters plus an epilogue, so 50 chapters total, and very nearly 100k words.

When it noticeably impacts your numbers. In the middle of that experiment right now. Title and description strongly imply incest, content has nothing of the kind beyond brief recollections of traumatic events with little graphic depiction. It got the readers - 5K in the first day is a personal best - but it's one of my lowest scorers so far. It's in GS, so once it falls off the first page of the "new" list (already occurred), it should drop back to a normal-ish pace for the category (already occurred).

It's probably a fine measuring stick to use, but I'm too new here to have any sort of regular numbers to compare against.

Like I said, I was only half serious. It occurs to me that I have done something on purpose in the same story which will almost definitely piss more people off

The target for today was 5000 words to finish Stormwatch Chapter 11, but I'll probably fall short of that. I had to work at the sheriff's office today so that screwed up my schedule. (I hate how life interferes with my writing!!!) Once this is chapter is finished and approved by Madam Beta/Editor, I can get back to Gods Save the Queen Book 2. I'm 60k words short of finishing that.

My first attempt at a novel came in at 94K. And I feel like I kind of rushed the ending. But the reviews were generally favorable.

94k is a good size for a novel. It took me a while to learn to stick the landing. I found a good climax, followed by about 15k of wrap-up and maybe a teaser for the next book is the best ending.

I had written a story that was 84k words and someone said "You should publish that." At the time I was under the impression that a novel was about 150k words or better (still overwhelmed by Lord of the Rings) so I mentioned that I had a lot of work to do on it. He then told me the truth - 84k is just fine.

Since I write many books in series I end up spending a lot of time with the ending, I need a satisfying ending, but the story still goes on so I have to pique the readers desire to grab book #2 (or three or what ever) In my Gods Save the Queen books - the books are fully stand alone, but they're part of a series. I want the reader to pick up any book in the series and read it and get a satisfying read even though they didn't read Book #1. Awesome exposition is needed to bring the reader up to speed but not so much as to bore the hell out of a seasoned veteran. Terry Pratchett was the master at awesome exposition and when I grow up I want to write just like him!

My series Gods Save the Queen has a good size appendix because there's so much going on in the background. The appendix is built in tables. I wonder if I could publish that here saving the tables as .jpg files and posting the appendix as an illustrated story.
