The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

I wore a Broncos windbreaker out to run errands this morning, and the woman running the checkout at a pet store told me "Great game yesterday."

My answer was, "Yeah, but if they keep doing it that way, I'm gonna die."
Our Lobos are doing great this year ...

Historically good, with two games left. They're at Air Force next week (where's your loyalty on that one?) and home against undefeated San Diego State to end the season.

Then the Mountain West Conference reshuffles. Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Colorado State and Utah State all leave for the PAC-12 while UT El Paso joins. Northern Illinois (?) will join for football only and Hawaii joined for football this year and will be a full member next year. Grand Canyon University and UC Davis will join for games other than football.

That is going to be a tough one to root for ...

It's raining and the lightning alert on my weather app is going off as I type. That means it's a good day to spend at the keyboard. I've already got 500 words done and hope to get more done today.

I've got a fresh pot of coffee brewing and the teapot is hot. There are cupcakes and muffins (try the apple pie ones, they're really good) on the counter along with my first pumpkin pie of the season.

I'll be over in the corner working away on my story, having finally worked through the tough part of the story. I'm hoping the plot bunnies will leave me alone long enough to get some more words written.

Popping by to belated give a vote for 70s classic rock.
Still in hospital but in half hour get to try sold food. Speaking of which hope somebody is feeding the plot bunnies.
Hoping to get home tomorrow. My poor characters must miss me, was just about to start sex scene need to remember how it works.

When you left I had 1 story I was working on.

Now I have 2 versions of that story, plus a new one that came up from a poetry thread, plus I have a good V-Day idea although I'm intimidated that @redgarters and @Aoife_from_Ulster have finished their stories because that's already mega competition.

And then there's one in a dark corner of my mind that could be a good LW story if I ever need a fix of those views and comments, and I'm willing to sacrifice my virtue in order to get them.

The bunnies seem quite robust to me. Get better and they'll be here.

Of my dearest Red, I truly hope I do not intimidate you or anyone.

I have nothing much else to do but write and be a Nana to my granddaughter so my days are spent writing. I am truly honored my friend

Oh, don't worry about mine. I highly doubt this one is real competition material, though it could do ok in it's category, given some time. So write like the wind! Feed those bunnies! Go TeamRed! ❤️

So what turned out to be an interesting little side excursion, research into the poetry form & style called "sijo" used by the entertainer women of colonial Korea, has completely taken over my mind for the last day and a half.

These things are so interesting I think they deserve to be the theme of a story all their own.

I also have a story in the dark corners of my mind that could be a LW story... But I think it might work at least as well as a voyeur story if it ever decides to crawl out into the light of day.

The poet TheRedLantern would like to read a sijo from her upcoming collection entitled "Will Write Stuff For Page Views":

I scream out loud, into the void. Only silence. Night time stillness.
I long to be, heard and felt. To feel alive, to feel I exist.
Loving Wives, page views, comments. Price is my soul but what's that worth?

It's fun isn't it. I did that with Old Engish and Beowulf.

On the headland,
Within the barrow,
Stands a hero's ship.
There we placed the Old Wolf's body,
And with golden tribute
Made his shroud.
There never was
A vessel so well equipped:
Bright steel,
swords and mail,
helms of iron,
Broad-gold and rings,
And glorious gifts,
Thralls to serve him,
Maidens to please him,
Lay around that mast.
Placed in the barrow,
That precious booty,
And all of this,
Was as his own people
Provided for him:
Honored he was,
The Old-Wolf at his funeral.
Above the barrow,
His final home,
We set the horse-head standard,
The sacrifices to Wōdan,
For the Old Wolf was ever,
The raven-feeder,
Then giving him honor,
Praising his prowess,
Mourning his passing,
We gave him to that barrow.
And the truth of that last voyage,
No wiseman, nor hero under heaven,
Can say who will gain that cargo,
But now the Young Wolf,
The ring-giver, the raven-feeder
Leads us to victory
Far to the Southland he will lead us
His warriors he will take into battle
Riches and fame
Women and ale
Again lie before us,
A kingdom we will carve
In the South Land
Drink now we will,
To victory in battle
To a new land to take
To the Young Wolf who leads us
To the Old and the New...

Research, research...

I was doing some fairly casual research into Zuni Salt Mother, with the idea that her story could become the third installment of "The Third Ring."

Maybe that'll happen. Maybe not. In the mean time I found this photo that represents the Navajo Salt Woman.

I thought it was a cool image in almost every way, so y'all get to see it.

When I saw her poise, posture and gaze i was mesmerized but then when I really looked at her clothing and hair a second time I was suddenly imagining what it would be like "on the set" of this photo, waiting for that perfect or imperfect moment to capture this. Breathtaking to an extent in beauty and grace

@ChloeTzang - I love the "Hearses at daybreak"
@NotWise - beautiful picture

It's another gray morning but the rain has stopped (for now). Another day that I'll be able to get some writing done.

There's a fresh pot of coffee brewing and the teapot is hot. There are cookies and pastries on the counter. Since the plot rabbits are getting a little daring, they are under covers so make sure to put the covers back on after helping yourself to the snacks.

I'll be over in the corner knocking the plot bunnies off the keyboard while I'm trying to type. I'm hoping to get a few more words done today.

Now THIS is a party I would love to have been invited too

That's hilarious! I'm not sure if I could understand the language (Elitist mid-20th century English spoken by university professors) but I would have gone to that party and hung around claiming "YOU PROMISED HEARSES!"

Wait - his son, Christopher John, was a reserve officer in the Navy, this was his 21st birthday... I know for a fact that I preferred MY coming of age at 21, and it wasn't spent hanging out with stuffy college professors. I was in Turkey and there was this Turkish chick who worked at Mudjats... but that's a different story.

Wait - his son, Christopher John, was a reserve officer in the Navy, this was his 21st birthday...

He won a place to study English at Trinity College, Oxford, aged 17 (that would be 1941), but after a year and a half there he received his call-up papers for military service. He joined the Royal Air Force in July 1943 and at the start of 1944 was sent to South Africa for flight training. He gained his "wings" as a fighter pilot and was commissioned in January 1945. He was given a posting back in England in February 1945, at Market Drayton in Shropshire. In June 1945 he switched to the Fleet Air Arm - so he would have only recently xferred into the Navy when he had his 21st, but he would have been in the military for around 2.5 years already. He was demobilized at the end of 1946.

The wind would have been cooperative.

I'm not sure about Salt Woman's standing among the Navajo. They adopted some of the folklore of cultures that preceded them here, but not all of it, and it doesn't all carry the same weight and meaning as the original.

Zuni Salt Mother was a powerful and independent woman. I think she was the mother of their people, but I'm not sure of that. I'm also not positive about their father. He may have been the Turquoise God, who followed Salt Mother when she tired of the unappreciative people around her and took her act south.

To the Zuni, Zuni Salt Lake is the embodiment of Salt Mother, and salt from the lake is her flesh. They eat her, and they use her flesh in sacred ritual.
