Becky punched the steering wheel of her little VW bug in frustration. What a time to run out of gas! She thought back to the creepy gas station she'd passed not half an hour ago and closed her eyes in frustration. She should have stopped. So what if the place looked like a serial-killer hangout? At least if she'd gassed up back there... she wouldn't be pulled over to the side of this mountain road, two hours after dark, with nothing but the darkness to keep her company.
Well... nothing to be done about it now. She considered getting out to flag down the next car, but who knows what kind of weirdo she might run into at this time of night in this part of Northern California? No... better by far to just lock the doors and crawl into the back seat and try to get some sleep. Once morning came, she could walk back down the hill to the gas station and get some gas. She'd be a day late getting home, but she'd still get home. Eventually.
With a sigh, Becky opened the door and clambered out of the car. It was dark outside, but her eyes were adjusting to the starlight quickly. In fact... the sheer amount of stars out was impressive in and of itself. Becky was a city girl... had been her whole life, and in the city, you never saw the stars. Tonight, though, with not even a moon to dim them... she was in awe. She brushed back a strand of pink hair (her mother had given her shit for an hour when she saw she'd dyed it pink... but whatever) to get a better look, and then, for no reason, a chill shot down her spine. There were so many of them! Each of them... an individual sun. With planets surrounding them. Maybe with somthing living on them. It was overwhelming.
The silence of the wooded mountain road settled in on her like a cloud, and she suddenly wanted nothing more than to be back in her car. She tugged at the handle... and her heart sank. It was locked. And there were her keys still sitting in the ignition inside.
Suddenly, Becky felt very alone, very cold, and very vulnerable. She turned to face the stars again, and that weird feeling of oppression returned.
By the prickling of the hairs on the back of her neck, Becky knew that she wasn't alone.
