“Democrats have long feared that in a national crisis, President Donald Trump would seize the chance to stretch his powers and sweep aside constitutional restraints,” they wrote. “Yet as the pandemic rages, Trump may be creating an unanticipated legacy: By ceding some control to the states, he’s allowing the nation’s governors to reacquire executive muscle that has withered in the age of the imperial presidency.”

Following the former vice president’s appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” supporters of the president fanned out to the cable shows, including on the Fox News network, to push the story that Biden assaulted former staffer Tara Reade 27 years ago — only to have the president dismiss the accusation when asked about it.

Asked about the controversy on Friday, the president told Fox News personality Dan Bongino, “All of a sudden you become a wealthy guy, you’re a famous guy, then you become president. And people that you’ve never seen, that you’ve never heard of, make charges,” Trump stated while also admitting he was “sticking up” for Biden. “I would just say to Joe Biden, ‘Just go out and fight it.’”

With at least seventeen sexual assault cases pending against Trump, that, of course, is the position he should take publicly (while egging on his supporters to take other positions for him).

The stupidity of Trump and his supporters is to bring the topic up at all considering Trump's own towering vulnerability on the subject.

Doesn't mean it shouldn't possibly bring Biden down. It just means if it does, Trump should be toppling from a much higher pile of Trump at the same time.

Trump argues he’s done more than ending slavery in appeal to black voters

President Donald Trump made eye-brow raising claims about how he has impacted African Americans on Saturday.

With the public health and economic impacts of the coronavirus response disproportionately harming black Americans, Trump took to Twitter to brag that he’s even better than Abraham Lincoln, who fought a deadly war to end slavery.

“Trump has done more for Blacks than all the other Presidents combined! Are we together?” a Twitter user replied to a tweet from Trump attacking MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace.

Trump agreed.

“So true, although Honest Abe wasn’t bad,” Trump wrote.

5.4-magnitude earthquake hits near Puerto Rico

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit near southern Puerto Rico on Saturday, jolting many from their beds and forcing at least 50 families to relocate on an island where some people still remain in shelters from previous quakes earlier this year. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit just off the coast of Tallaboa, Peñuelas, and was felt in nearby towns — including Guánica and Guayanilla, where hundreds of homes were destroyed by a quake in early January that killed one person and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.

The temblor hit as Puerto Ricans remain home under a nearly two-month lockdown to help curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“This is a crisis on top of another crisis,” said Health Secretary Lorenzo González.

Venezuela says it foiled an incursion by ‘mercenaries’

Venezuela’s leftist government said Sunday it foiled an incursion from the sea, killing eight members of a group of alleged mercenaries bent on “terrorist acts” aimed at overthrowing President Nicolas Maduro.

Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said the group, which he said originated in Colombia, tried to land aboard fast boats before dawn in the northern coastal state of La Guaira but were intercepted by the military and special police units.

“Thanks to the opportune, effective action of our Bolivarian Armed Forces and special police action forces of the National Bolivarian Police, some were shot down and some were detained,” said Reverol, speaking on state television.

A massive air, sea and land search was underway for remnants of the attackers, he said.

Diosdado Cabello, deputy leader of the ruling Socialist Party, said later that clashes had so far resulted in “eight people dead and two detained.”

Cabello said the operation was “orchestrated” by the United States and its Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), with support from its staunch South American ally, Colombia.

One of the two people detained is a DEA agent, he said.

Trump angry with FBI’s Christopher Wray and wants to replace him: report

According to a report from Axios, Donald Trump is reportedly angry with FBI Director Christopher Wray for staying silent on the recent revelations in the Michael Flynn case and would like to dump him.

The report, from Jonathan Swan, notes the president is being restrained from another firing by close aides and Attorney General Bill Barr.

“Trump’s dissatisfaction with Wray — whom he nominated for the post in 2017 after firing Jim Comey — is nothing new,” Swan wrote. “A source who has discussed the FBI director repeatedly with the president said Trump ‘has never felt like Wray was his guy’ and does not trust him to ‘change the culture’ of the FBI.”

Tensions start to boil over as essential workers get fed up with ‘the insane system that got us in this mess’

Friday’s impressive May Day walkouts and demonstrations involving workers at Amazon, Whole Foods, Walmart, Target and others did not amount to a general strike in the classic sense.

But they should be seen as part of a wave of smaller strikes that worker advocates believe necessary before the big showdown.

“Workers are starting to challenge the insane system that got us in this mess,” said Bill Ragen. He is an SEIU [Service Employees International Union] member and organizer with ShutDownDC. “There’s not enough to go back to the status quo, which wasn’t working for us anyhow. There is a movement being started.”

Looks like a grassroots revolt is starting in the Labor business as Labor Leaders call for restraint and workers organizing to protect their lives and jobs.

“It seems like a pie-in-the-sky sort of thing — but it’s a battle that’s gotta be fought,” he said recently. “There’s no way out of it. The only other way is just to submit to totalitarianism and watch the world burn up around us.”

Workers are being forced to sacrifice everything from their jobs to their lives during COVID-19 crisis. The ruling class, according to Hamilton, was really well-prepared for the pandemic and is now taking full advantage of it to advance its own interests.

“They’re really coming down hard on working people, changing the rules and making sure we emerge from this [pandemic] with more power in the hands of Big Capital than ever before,” Hamilton says.
