What happens if the Writer's Guild does go ahead and strike in May? Will television networks only show reruns and those ridiculous 'reality' shows?

What about movie theaters? Will they just do the re-release thing and show old movies over and over?

Will we be spending even more time on the computer and here at Lit? Will the doctors become even richer after we all develop carpal tunnel syndrome?

Will it happen? I believe the strike against the advertisers lasted for 6 months or more until it was recently settled.

WGA Strike

BrainyBeauty-

Yes, in fact, TV networks will subject us to reality shows and re-runs, if not immediately after the strike begins then whenever (by autumn at the latest) they run out of first-run material.

As for the movies, the same can be said. There will be fresh movies for several months before the studio stockpile runs dry.

As regards carpal tunnel syndrome, if there is a publicly traded orthopedics company, now might be a good time to buy in!

Oh, you mean the strike hasn't happened yet? I thought for sure that it had! You know, only 1 original episode of Voyager in a month, and lots of Buffy reruns. Well then, if the strike will be worse than this crap, I will be getting a lot of other stuff done.

The common wisdom here is that "You can do without actors for six months. You CAN'T do without writers." Even for Reality shows. Believe it or not, those shows still have to be "written". Premises have to be articulated, treatments have to be polished, storyboards have to be conceptualized, lead-ins, V.O.'s, promos and teasers have to be crafted. You think the Producers do all that?

Some shows have been producing over time to prepare for the strike, but a lot of writers haven't particiapted. Neither have the actors, who have been refusing to work 18 hours a day to shoot two episodes at the same time just so the studios can store product.

Films can hold out for a while, since studios only produce ten or so major films a year, and they've got plenty of scripts laying around. But TV is a hungry animal, and it feeds, feeds, feeds on writing. It's a writer's medium.

I don't think this strike will last long.

Dixon, I was under the impression that these reality shows were already in the can and were just waiting for sweeps month to be aired. Isn't that correct?

April, I wonder about that every year now. It seems the only time we ever see first run episodes is during Nov, Feb, and May sweeps months.

Lustful Gent, hello and welcome to the board! :) Let me know if you find a good doctor group to invest in.

I suppose that's another perk to not having cable (Really, I've got a whole list of good reasons not to have cable, all I've got is my VCR and a pile of movies.) On the down side though, I didn't even know there was anything wrong. (or is that really even a down side?) Ignorance is bliss... ~LOL~

They're back! They're back! <dancing around in his sweats> My favorite shows are back! Voyager's back! Buffy's back! Angel's back! Dark Angel's back! Xena's back!

And boy, those backs are looking good! Well, Voyager's is kinda hard and metal and clunky and Angel's...hmmm, nope, not going there. But the rest - hmm, hmm - you look mahvelous!

Can't you tell I have absolutely no life at all? ;)

My TV believes it exists only to serve the needs of the VCR.
