HARTFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - Connecticut's highest court on Friday unexpectedly struck down a ban on gay and lesbian marriage, making the New England state the third in the nation to allow full-fledged marriage for same-sex couples.

After four years of legal wrangling in the state court system, the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that a ban on gay marriage constituted "cognizable harm" and infringed on a "fundamental right" of same-sex couples.

The decision, which overturns a lower court ruling, follows the legalization of gay marriage in California this year and in Massachusetts in 2003. It was hailed by gay rights advocates as a proud day after battles over the culturally divisive issue in several states.

I truly never thought i would see this kind of progress in my lifetime!

SO very glad i was wrong!! :D

On one hand it sounds great, on the other hand it is sad that it is something that required the courts to set right -- not the people themselves. Hopefully, in time that will be the case. Until then, there may be plenty of backlash.

I would think one glimmer of hope is that this election will not be decided by some "gay marriage amendment". I think if most people (that means str8's) were honest, they would admit that such "gay" issues were a big reason that Bush one this last election. I remember being at a company sponsored forum for the congressional candidates to air their views. The war pro/con didn't get the biggest applause. The outsourcing/immigrant issue didn't get the biggest applause. The economy didn't get the biggest applause. Even the issue of abortion which some feel is a matter of murder didn't get the biggest applause. Rather it was how we needed a constitutional amendment to keep homosexuals and their agenda from destroying straight marriages...

I had never been so disgusted. I had never raised any banner proclaiming I was gay, and give me give me give me whatever I want. So I was dumb founded that this rose to such an importance. Especially since it was an even bigger issue than abortion. Does homosexual marriage raise to a higher level of evil than the supposed murder that is what they say abortion is? It makes me think that they are hypocrites.

Yeah, California's dealing with that on November 4th, Prop 8 is set up to put "marriage is between a man and a woman" into their state constitution. This from a state where the courts have already decided that gays have the right to marry, and one of the most liberal states in the country. And there's actually a possibility it will pass. :(

Yet this hasn't happened in Massachusetts. The courts decided it there too, and it's been fine. It has yet to go before the voters there; it went before the legislature in 2007 but was defeated and won't be brought up again until 2012. Perhaps by that time the movement will have spread and it won't be so unusual.

Embarrassed to reveal my ignorance, but what happened with prop 8?
