That kid waiting for a lung transplant

10-year old girl dying because she needs a lung. 10 years old is too young, by rule, to be put on the adult transplant list. Judge orders her to be put on the list.

What do we think of that?

I have a book about infant heart and lung transplants. Its feasible if you have a donor, but a brutal process as kids innards are much smaller than adults. Getting on the list prolly wont save the child, more like getting aboard the Titanic becuz of a cancellation or no show.

Her parents used the media to threaten the director of health and human services, Cathleen Sibelius and then the day they got the news they made an acceptation she became ill in a taxi on her way to do a live sean hannity interview.

How fucked up is that.

My feelings on the procedure is help the kids do whats right and feasible and fair but for fucks sakes.....this was all wrong.

I haven't read much about this, so my question is how do they fit adult lungs into a 10 year old?

I don't know enough about it but if she can take the transplant then she should be on the list. If she can't and it would be a waste of a lung just so someone can feel better about themselves then no. It's harsh but organs are rare enough as it is.

The issues are:

1. The transplant rules say you have to be at least 12.
2. The HHS lady said they couldn't make an exception, but should review the rule.
3. A judge directed the transplant controllers to put this girl on the list.

Maybe it's time the rules were reviewed and modified, but that wouldn't be something that would happen overnight. Life sucks sometimes, for everyone.

I will catch hell for this, but I think 70s are too old. The odds of you living 5 years anyway is small, so give it to someone younger that can live a full life.

I'm sure there are a ton of legal, medical and ethical problems with the whole thing. All in all I don't really find it interesting enough to follow though. Most transplant cases are sad and certainly in the case of young people because it's never their fault their organs are failing but not everyone can be saved. I'd rather watch Duck Dynasty reruns.

That was the doctor's question too. It's a very difficult procedure, has a lot more risk, has a higher level of rejection, and can fuck her up for life. The family couldn't find a doctor to do it, so they had to go to the media to pressure one into it. He didn't want to do it, but was being transformed into this horrible media, so compromised by transplanting lung tissue rather then the entire lung, which, as someone else has already stated, didn't work the way the parents wanted it to.

These parents apparently thought that the doctors were just being mean or something. But if my kid were dying I'm sure some crazy ass shit would go through my head too, so who the fuck am I to judge?
