This afternoon I pulled an envelope from the mail box with a return address to the I.R.S. (No this was not a rebate check, wrong kind of envelope.)

Well needless to say I'm starting to get that bad feeling in the pit of my stomach seeing this. A letter from Uncle Sam can't be good news.

When I get inside I open the envelope and start reading the letter. Oh shit, right at the top of the letter they state that they had found a problem with my return. I keep reading as my heart sinks and I'm not feeling well.

It took two readings of the letter for it to sink in. They weren't telling me they were auditing me, oh hell no. The problem they had found was a couple of things I didn't claim that I could have claimed. Because of this instead of the $1600.00 return I had filed I am now getting $2400.00.

Needless to say I'm happy about this, although I could have done without the near Heart Attack.

I've heard of a lot of people's taxes getting recalculated this year. My mother originally owed the IRS $190, and then she got a letter stating that there were a couple of things she could've claimed, and didn't, and she got her $190 back plus another $300. :)

Who needs H&R Block?

Within a 2 minute walk of where I am right now, there are 4 different tax preparers. These are the "cash in a flash" people. Three of the offices are only open for about 3 months of the year. Only one stays open until April 15.

They pay the lease all year long, just for the 10 to 15 weeks of the tax season.

Any business that can pay the rent all year long on 3 months revenue must be making a lot of money.

Happened to me too cat, my cpa actually found some earned income credits that had been over looked, so instead of paying 1800.00 I got 100.00 back!

But I hear you, I've gotten those letters too... definitely an *OH SHIT* moment! :)

It is a little known secret that Obama cut taxes for the majority of taxpayers in 2009. His "make work pay" tax credit is $400 for individuals in the lower income brackets. This year, I ended up paying the lowest federal income taxes since I first started paying taxes decades ago. And yet we complain about Obama and his deficit? There is a direct correlation between tax receipts and deficit spending, a concept most Americans refuse to acknowledge.

Good on you, cat. :D

I use a tax prep program and file on line...I was astounded to learn that I was getting a refund of $600.00 this time 'round...using the standard deduction no less.
