Thanks to Our Allies

It would not mean foreign troops on US soil. What it does do, is make available foreign assets- airfields, material, intelligence, etc that would expedite the launching of retaliatory measures by the US

The U.S. would have to go back to NATO to ask for specific kinds of support, but officials say invoking Article Five would provide on an "expedited basis" use of air space by the allies and make other kinds of assistance available.

I hope so, but opens our space to them as well. Thanks Harpoon

tony blair has been speaking alot on the news here today about saying its not just america that has been attacked but the whole of the free world ... it also seems that if america does make a revenge attack english troops/planes could be going along with them

in someways this scares me beacuse it could make england a target too if theres a next time ... but it is the right thing to do for england to stick by america 100% in this even if its abit scary

I believe that NATO passed a resolution saying they would back any U.S. military operation against any people involved in the attack. Not like we need your permission, but thank you Europe for taking our back (I'm being serious here).

My biggest question is where the hell has p_p_man been for the past couple days?

Just my personal thoughts, but after hearing Colin Powell's statements today, he is preparing for the retaliation and "building" a coalition already.

It was pretty clear, however, that he is asking for no direct military assistance. NATO will be involved as support, but this time instead of a coalition of commanders, there will be one.

They played the American anthem at Buckingham Palace today and held a moment of silence... never been done before...

i saw that on the news Dillinger theres many americans that are stuck in england right now and not able to get back to america it must be terribley hard for them ... it was the queens idea to play the american national anthem at the changing of the guard its only time something different has ever been played it was very beautiful and sad too see there was american flags being waved at the gates and people crying

Article 5...

The NATO item in question is Article 5 which deems an attack by one to be an attack on all. In the 52 years of the alliance it has never been invoked. That it has been invoked is more important than most seem to appreciate.

If the US chooses to go this alone it runs the risk of diplomatic suicide. Even Desert Storm was undertaken with a number of allies, including moderate Arab states. It is important that any action taken is seen as coming from the hands of the world and not just a vengeful US.

In briefings by military analysts it has already been pointed out that for the US to stage effective military strikes it needs air space over Pakistan and possibly Russia. A coalition makes this possible and reduces the liklihood of angering states that are currently sympathetic and cooperative to the US plight.

The WTC was in America but the economic damage has been inflicted on foreign countries as well, including a number of NATO members. It was an attack on all even though the US bore the brunt.
