Thank you for the votes that are gone.

I just wanted to shoot a thank you to all readers who voted my stories to their high scores. After getting fed up with votes vanishing, I have now locked out the vote ability on all my stories. It's nobody's fault but the system's. I had several 4 and 5 votes on various stories including new ones that just disappeared. Can't get them back, don't know why, wouldn't want them gone anyway. But they still vanished. I decided it's better to have the stories up with no score than with a score that can't stay fixed.

The public comment ability is locked as well. If anyone wants to send me public feedback, you can still do that. In fact, I prefer it to the impersonal response of voting. If you want to just read the stories and not send feedback, I hope you enjoy them. Thank you.

This is not a rant directed at my readers. I appreciate your attention. The votes and feedback I did get were worth the effort. The stories will stay up for all to enjoy. I just don't want to be motivated constantly to check on their scores and get disappointed when I log in to find votes gone. Can everyone understand that?

Later, -AN

How do you know about specific votes that have disappeared? I only see a vote average on my story page - like 3.75 or something like that. I can't see a read out of 20 people voted 5, 16 voted 3 and so on...

Ericahope: I see average score and total number of votes. With simple math I can guess how many votes of each score there were. Seeing the score change frequently helps.

Lynn: Thank you for all the ways you've helped me keep my chin up. I appreciate them.

I go with Lynn and support you.

Take a look at the 'Confusion over Voting' thread. The site sweeps multivotes from the same ISP and, so I was told, if you vote on the stars then vote with a comment on the thermometer, this counts as two votes and the second gets 'swept'.

Would explain part of your problem but, in reality, an anonymous voting system is impossible to police.

Yes I can understand you - it is really impossible to understand how suddenly the number of votes goes down! Does somebody have access to the voting system and as soon as let's say 100 vote for a story then the score is reduced to 98 and then suddenly later on to 97? It is a weird system and I shall think twoce before allowing votes on any subsequent stories I write and just ask for comments to be made.

Thanks, all, for your support. After consideration, I have turned back on the public comment capability but left the voting disabled. If people want to leave their reviews on my stories as feedback, that's fine. Their comments will be proof enough of ratings and I can delete anything I find unwarranted. I don't care about the scores, or even the little red Hs, so those can stay absent. I hope people will continue to read, enjoy, and send feedback on occasion. I will check public comments once or twice a month.

Vanishing votes

Does anyone know why vote totals keep dropping, yet hits on the stories keep rising? The vote tally for one of my stories dropped by 120+ votes over the course of 2 months. Just wondering.

The Web site has a mechanism for periodically sweeping out votes it considers erroneous. The Web site administrators won't share their formula for what consitutes erroneous in their view.

Missing Votes

I wrote admin once and was told that they cut votes if more than 1 came from the same ip address. Thus my wife was unable to vote for my story if a friend had already read it and voted for it at our house. My wife voted , the score went up and a few days later hers was subtracted and the score went down. On the other hand, they also sweep out multiple low votes if some loser just decides to force a low score by voting a 2 many times. had that happen once also.

I've just reported a load of my stories as being hit with low votes.
I was watching my ratings reduce on every single one with a red H, and even when they'd been up a while, I could mathematically prove that someone was hitting them with a 1 rating, twice every day.
I guess someone has a grudge, but I'd vastly prefer if they could tell me what their problem is instead of this petty, cowardly bullshit.

The problem with IP sweeps is that its easily bypassed unfortunately. :(

Yeah, I've seen some weird things happen with votes too, but this one is a new one: the story I just posted is showing 7 votes, but just two views? How does THAT happen?

The votes register immediately; the views are only updated a couple of times a day.
