MP-- I decided to put myself in the line of fire. No, it isn't 1 material, and neither is it a 2. Personally, I liked it. I'm an avid sailing buff, so perhaps my opinion doesn't count, but I did like it. A little on the heavy side of things, but I liked the imagery.

And on a personal side, it's nice to know other people have temper tantrums just like me. *g* Like my sainted Gram still says every time I get red and choked with fury -- "And this, too, shall pass."

You're too good a writer to allow this kind of crap to ruin your day. Let the onesie have his/her opinion. There are plenty of people out there with different viewpoints.

Actually, this was much like primal scream therapy. If you'd heard it, you'd think someone was being murdered...but they're just venting out frustration.

Up until this thread, I avoided the poetry here, simply because I would get flashbacks to my college English Professor. He rammed poetry down our throats, and he wasn't the best to listen to in class. Nor the most attractive. Scary even.

BUT...I explored it here, starting with MP's poem. I found it to be a very interesting "listen." I'll be exploring this section more and no cringing as I do.

It's a shame there is no way to track who votes what score on what piece. Might hinder these idiots.

I still like the idea of a pop-up window that says, "You just gave this story/poem a 1. Please take a few moments to explain to the author why, so that they can use the information in order to improve their writing. Thank you."

Has it ocurred to you that it's entirely possible that the person voting was commenting on the audio and not the text?

The volume level of the recording is very low... ?

In general, what are the standards readers should associate with each number? I've probably been grossly insensitive in my voting, but I'm willing to listen if you want to set me straight

I would guess that readers and authors have different goals for a story, which effects the standards a reader judges against and the way a reader votes.

DarlingBri - did you listen to it? The recording levels and quality were very good.

Regarding Ratings... what deserves a "1".... only crap and MP doesn't write crap. Her work may not be everyone's cup of tea but I can't imagine why anyone would give it a "1" unless they had ulterior motives.

DarlingBri - you haven't been around long enough to see the whole history of what goes on with the ratings. MP too regularly gets slammed with 1's coming from, many of us believe, people on the BB who have disagreements with her and not on the quality of her work.

MP isn't the only one this has happened to. I've got some very respectable numbers on my stories and poems. The day my first poem hit the top list (you need at least 10 votes to get on the list) it immediately got voted down. Now how would I get almost all 5's and some 4's right up till I hit #10 and then start getting ones?

Ah well - I've stopped worrying about it for the most part - it bugs me sometimes but I try not to stress over it.

Back to the point... Madame Pandora - your poem was wonderful.

The anger passed not long after I posted, but the responses kept coming and coming.

This was just a little hissy fit to blow off steam. I thought that, here in the smaller audience of the Author’s Board I wouldn’t be rippling too big a puddle ;-) In the back of my mind, I knew I was giving the idiot exactly what they wanted. It isn't the first 1 I've gotten, it won't be the last. 99 times out of 100 they don't even register anymore.

I should have taken a breath and been big enough to shrug it off. I had a moment of shrewish weakness. I just wanted that one person to know exactly what I thought of 'em, no matter how it played right into their smirking plan. I vented.

I had that happen to me too. I have only been around a few weeks, but one of my stories made it to number three. I got great votes, great feedback, and then when it made the top list, BAM! It was immidiately voted down to number 67, IN ONE DAY!

The sad part is that I don't think most of the bad 1 votes come from guests in this situation. I think they come from other Lit authors who want to vote others down to make their own stories higher on the list. That is truly sad when you consider this is a community for writers. We should be more like a support group for each other, not voting down others to get a little glory.

Besides, I hold the little green E I got on two of my stories higher than any of the ratings. *grin*

For some reason, that feels even better.

I wish everyone happy writing...going to check out audio stories now.

Like most authors here I've been hit occasionally with the dreaded 1, seen a score drop like the NASDAQ after Intel reports it's quarterly earnings will be 37 cents. But today, today was absolutely FUCKING RIDICULOUS.

I'm a nerd, I've actually put together a spreadsheet to track my scores and totals and that kind of stuff. So I checked my scores, found I'd received some nice scores and a very nice e-mail from a fellow writer, and went out on this beautiful day to shoot some hoops.

Came home two hours later, logged on to check Soccernet.com to see who won the English soccer matches, checked my Lit scores, and SOMEONE GAVE ME A ONE FOR EVERY SINGLE STORY I'VE WRITTEN. I mean, someone took the time to click on every one of the 16 stories I wrote, scrolled thru to the voting part, and gave me a 1. Un-fucking-believable. What kind of pathetic fuck would waste their time this way? Hey, you don't like a story, vote as you see it. Frankly, I don't think any of my stories deserve a one, but that's my opinion. But this malevolent cocksucker didn't express his opinion either. I seriously doubt this thumbdick took the time to actually READ the stories in question. Sixteen stories in two hours? I don't think so.

So now I know how you all feel, you who have been fucked by the anonymous and tiny-brained.

Time for a deep breath. The sun is shining. Eighty degrees out. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale cooling in the fridge...it'll be OK. It will be OK.
