I heard about plans for this sort of thing some years ago when working in an animal shelter. Now it's mainstream reality:

http://www.local6.com/news/3791494/detail.html

At the shelter, our immediate reaction was, "Oh, thank goodness someone's found a way to make MORE CATS. There's a desperate problem solved." On an average day we took in anywhere up to thirty cats and kittens, and if lucky adopted out a dozen. With the best will in the world, there was no way to house them all, even if many of them hadn't been too sick, FIV-positive, or unsocial to be rehomed. Euthanasia occurred daily.

What ARE people thinking? Who even wants the same exact pet over and over again anyway? Isn't that half the point of pets - their charming unpredictability and individual personality?

Fucking humans.

I can see your point.

But I can also think of a few pets I would love to have back.

$50,000? For fuck's sake! My uncle knows a guy who will stuff your cat and make it into a lamp for $100. Wouldn't it be funny if Genetic Savings And Clone ( the catchiest name ever) were just driving around to the animal shelters, looking for a cat that looked similar to your deceased pet ,and just pocketing all that money? That would be the greatest scam. I think I'm in the wrong business.

I wonder if they're mapping the feline genome.
"I'd like a clone of Ginger here, but can you please remove the hairball gene, the shedding gene, and the acting-like-a-stuck-up-high-school-girl gene?"

The first thing this article makes me think of is the rakunks in Atwood's Oryx and Crake.

HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Stupid fucking humans. Okay, it's finally started. Good, I was worried.

Hey, everyone not in the know. What attracts you to a pet are its mannerisms, most of which are NOT coded in the genes, but are based on environmental responses. What rich dumb people are doing is wasting money trying to return a dead cat and what they'll get is essentially a new cat of the same appearance.

Look for a quiet news story about it in a year or two when angry rich cunts demand to know why Poopsie isn't like their old Poopsie and in fact seems to have some radically differing mannerisms.

So, hail to this brief combination of stupidity and capitalism. The Olestra of Biotech industry.

I have to disagree with you there. What ATTRACTS you to a pet is its looks. What ENDEARS you is its mannerisms which develop over a period of time.

I had two kittens from the same litter once, from the day they were born till they eventualled died. They had similar appearances but their mannerisms were nothing at all alike even though I tried to give them the same degree of TLC.

What you would have then would be a dog.

I took a long time choosing which puppy from a litter of Border Collies I'd like. I didn't go for the one with the "cutest" markings, or the one with the biggest eyes. I watched them play, for ages. I watched how they interacted with each other and with their mother.

I didn't choose the quietest dog, neither did I choose the roudiest. I chose the one that was playful, but affectionate. I made a bloody good choice. I'm sure any one of the puppies from that litter will have made a fine pet, but what I'm getting at is that I chose him going largely on his personallity.

You are so right in saying that pets from the same litter (be they cats or dogs) are vastly different from each other. Just the same as children usually are.

As for this cloning malarky, what a load of bollocks. Do these people have no shame? It would not be the same pet!!!! Yes, it would look the same, it might even act slightly the same (basic personallity traits would still be evident), but, environmental factors do have a massive impact. They, most likely, would end up being a very different animal. I wouldn't want a "copy" of my Billy, after he's gone, I'd rather mourn him and remember him for his individuallity and get another dog - a completely different dog. The same thing goes for my cats.

This is just another way of taking advantage of people's grief.
